After flying into a curb after spinning out on the first rainy day in San Jose this fall I started replaces stuff in the rear suspension, and it came time to install that damn knuckle and I managed to fix it. I said oh what the hell might as wheel paint the brakes and my uglyass battle wheelz (92' GSX rims I bought off of ebay for $1.50 and picked em up ^_^) since I'm gonna take all that shit apart anyway.

Here's how it turned out:

BEFORE (YUCK CORROSION GALORE!)

WHOA THAT LOOKS COOL LOOKS LIKE A GIANT SHURIKEN! :p

COMMENCING SPRAYING

THERE THE HUB OH SO CLEAN I GOT THIS OFF A NEWER GALANT AT THE JUNKYARD, NO MORE RUSTY HUBS :)

DRIVERS SIDE

PASSENGER SIDE NOW DOESN'T THAT LOOK PURDY! ^_^

Here's the ugly ass 92' GSX wheel before the transformation

Here's what I like to call my Battle Wheelz, if ne1 is wondering what color I painted them it was gunmetal.

The finished product!

Just in case you wondering how much it cost me to do this:
__________________________________________________________
Drum to Disc conversion: 80 bucks (did it a year ago)
92' GSX wheels (2): $1.50 (gotta love EBAY)
VHT Caliper Paint: 7 bucks a can (still got half the can left for the front brakes :) Heh at least i didn't go and buy a 50 dolla brake caliper painting kit) :P
Duplicolor Gunmetal paint: 3 bucks (enough to do 2 wheels, got it at Kragen, looks like pencil led hehe :P )

I'm still deciding if I wanna paint the front brakes because I'm planning on doing a 2 piston caliper upgrade later on, I'm definately gonna paint my TSi battle wheelz gunmetal, haha I started already but I ran out of paint ^_^'

Oh my god, you just gave me an idea. I think I'm gonna spray paint my rims tomorrow gunmetal. How does it look up close, and can it withstand the heat? Did you have to get a special high heat spray paint since the rims get really hot from driving? How did you prep the surface before painting. Does it look like gunmetal powder coated rims? If I mess up, can I still powdercoat my rims for real? Please give me as much info as you can on exactly what you did, and how you covered up the tires when spraying? BTW, I'd be doing them on my stock 2000 eclipse 16" rims shown in the pic below...Thanks!

Should I also use a clear coat over the gunmetal spray?

I need to take some pics but I painted my rims low gloss black a few months back. I used 3 coats of primer, then 3 coats of engine paint then 2 coats of a clear coat and the paint still chips off some. I am going to powder coat then eventially because I am tired of having to touch them up.

Does it chip on the outside, or only on the inner part of the wheel (next to the brake hub). Like would the spokes of my rims get chipped too? Did you sand the wheels before you painted it? Please give me some more info on what you did, and would you recommend it?

I sanded one of the wheels but it took so damn long that I didn't do the other 3. One of the main spots I am having chipping is by the lug nuts. A rock or something hit one of the spokes and it chipped a little. I like the way they look on the car. They look profesional until you get really close then you can tell it's paint but I think it still looks pretty good.

Haha well they are my battle wheels so I didn't really give a crap about quality. I have to say they did turn out well, if I didn't like this color I woulda gone with flat black hehe :P Basically I cleaned the wheel with soap and water, mask the tire with newspaper and tape, and shot the paint on the rim. We'll see if it chips in a month or two, but like said battle rims they're made to take a beating hehe.... I should put some clear coat on them though.... I'm sure you can still powder coat them, that's the best thing to do.

hey whats up, battle rims huh, I like the sound of it...my question is for the calipers, when you take them off, do you have to let them bleed. The line I mean. I want to paint them red and need a little info.

Great job man!

One unrelated question though. When you did the read drum conversion, did you run into any problems or anything? (did you use the galant rear brakes too?) I know there's the mod writeup. Did you follow that exactly?

ahhh!!! ....a bunch of questions! heheh sorry!

Thanks! (and I'd love to get some real cheapy front rims w/ drag radials for the track!)

Wow lots of question for brakes today hehe. Ok well Randy fellow San Jose 2GNTer let me in on a 2g Talon TSi at a local junkyard. The reason is because I destroyed my passenger side drum when I drifted straight into a curb on the day 420! ahhh anyway... yeah I need new brakes. I didn't really care if I had discs or drums but I went and got the discs. I pulled them off the TSi myself for 80 bucks. that's dust shield, parking brake assembly, rotor, caliper, pads, and bracket. No parking brake line because some foo cut it. Gave em to me for 80 bucks, Kory got some for 160, so it varies. Kory got em from a full service yard too where the damn dude taking off hella rough handled it, it possible go to a self service.

Anyway I gave the brakes a new home, remember the law of the junkyard the few must be sacrificed so my car can survive hehe. Oh yeah I got most of the rear suspension plus rear sway bar too. So if you see a 2g at the junkyard strip that sucka for all it's got! I cleaned them with a wire brush wheel and tehy looked brand new, no rust anymore. I bolted them on, took a couple hours. The hardest part is bolting the 4 bolts to the dustshield, bearing/hub, and the disc. well teh hardest is actually taking apart the drum assembly and installing your old parking brake line. So I ultilized my old parking brake lines, its not perfect but it worx and it saved me a lotta work, since the hardest part in the mod document was the parking brake lines. And that's it, all wheel disc goodness! ^_^

no I didn't bleed the brakes when I took the calipers off but I probably should, worx fine though. It's not like I moved the piston back. I did the caliper hangin off a wire on the car because I didn't wanna remove the brake line and get brake goop all over the place. I also did the hub on the car too, I just covered everythingwill hella tape and newspaper. Spray paint ya gotta mask a lot. Hell I bet you can use engine detailer paint on rear rotors also, because the rear ones probably don't get as hot. I haven't don teh fronts yet.

Yup haha your the one I got the idea of painting these ugly ass GSX rims darker... :P

OH yeah heh I call them my battle wheels because the Japanese call races in japan battles, or haha bateru in engrish :P So basically these are the wheels and tires I use when I race at an autox or track. Hence my car has a battle style mode and erm cruisin mode. ^_^
