79167, What 12 dollars can do for stock GS-T wheels... Posted by reaxion, Dec-01-04 08:43 PM
I got really bored with my stock GS-T wheels a while back, and since they all got chipped and since I had nothing to do, I figured why not try and redo 'em. Here is the end result.
before with the primer....

after...

not bad if I say so myself.
let me tell you...all the work is in the prep. prep makes a difference.
and I was going to use either gunmetal, bronze, or black. in the end, I used iron...be a little different. = )

I rattle canned a whole fender, and before you laugh it looks pretty damn good for spray paint, almost a perfect color match but the clear coat is not quite as glossy. But if your any farther that 5 feet away you can't tell the difference.

I wouldn't mind painting my 14's, but i might be trading them for some 16's off a 3g GS, lol. I have to swap brakes too though, not completely sure how thats going to go.

hmm, you sir may have just convinced me to do my 14's. i always thought about going just a couple shades lighter. not black, not even gunmetal quite..just "tinting" them a bit...maybe even keeping the lip silver. what all prep work did you do to your wheels?

79371, RE: What 12 dollars can do for stock GS-T wheels... Posted by Dracas, Dec-10-04 06:08 PM
I will probably end up keeping the 14's... Now i just need to decide a nice color... I've been messing with photoshop, trying to get an idea.

I painted my old steelies with Rustoleum gloss black and they lasted almost 4 years. Looked better than just going hubcap-less imo. I've been giving thought to rattle-canning my FN01RCs, but I'm still liking the hyper silver (and everyone is telling me not to do it since the wheels are so nice still). :P
As for just what can be done with the can, check out the 3G wheels on my friend Chris's 1G. This picture really doesn't do them justice. They are stunning to say the least. It is black with silver (not white).

I rattle canned a roll pan for my S-10 I had and it looked like it came stock on the truck. If you are patient, do it in a controlled environment, and sand between coats it turns out alright. Just go heavier on the clearcoat and you're set.

I wanted to do black, but so common. I went iron. I love em...I did mine back in....july? its december now, theyre still holding up. its all in the prep.
I sanded them down, washed em with a scouring pad, primed, painted, laid down some laquer and then some clearcoat and voila, instant pimp. took me a good..5 hours? If I had a spare set, I would so take my time with them. I was thinking of polishing out my lips when it gets warmer again. which probably wont be for a while...

to answer your question, I deflated my tires down completely and pressed in the valve stem. after doing that, I masked the area around the rim with newspaper and masking tape (yes, even the tire if youre doing both sides)and everything was covered except for the rim. hope that helps!
