7499, Pics after sanding amber off gauges??? Posted by rabbi99, Sep-15-01 02:37 PM
Does anyone have any pics of what the gauges and HVAC controls look like after sanding the amber off and coloring them blue or green? I'm thinking about getting reverse-indiglo gauges, but if the HVAC isn't going to match at all I won't do it... Anyone??? Thanks!

yeah i was thinkin about this too, i think you can change the light int he back of it and it will do the trick, it works for the gauges so i figure it should work for the hvac too

Yeah, there was a thread about this a few weeks ago. I was just hoping someone had done it since then and could post a pic.
I think in the case of the gauges(at least on mine) the mph is white and the km/h is in amber... So a bulb might do the trick on that for the most part. But the HVAC is all the ambered plastic. I think I'm just gonna do the sanding and all dat.
Still, if anyone has done it or found some other way to make the HVAC blue let me know. I don't have the $ for performance mods right now, so I figure I can use the time to do the little cheap stuff like this... :-)

it's all colored plastic....and if you sand it, it's gonna look like crap. when you take off your guages and look at the back, you'll see how they had to carefully color certain parts just so the lighting would look even. that would be almost impossible(I said almost) to replicate in another color, efectively....
and to do all the guages would be quite the project....
the amber looks good....why change a good thing.

Koolade, have you taken the HVAC controls off? Do you think using very light sandpaper on them would still look like crap??
I mainly just wanna change those(then get reverse indiglos). The amber isn't that bad, but as you can kinda see in the pic(sorry crappy camera), it doesn't compliment my deck very well...Plus I have a radar detector with a bright green display up near my front left speaker... I just don't likey.

you'll end up havin to sand all your switches too....just get a radio that matches your amber dash.... alot of the older sony's do, and the alpines with dual illumination do too...kenwoods are close, but too dark....it's alot easier than messing with all the dash lights.

Nah, can't do that. I like this deck too much. Do you know how I could find out what size/type bulbs are behind the HVAC without ripping it apart?

I got that same deck, looks great ... at night. Too dim during the day. Get the indiglo guages like me, and it helps a lot.

Yeah, I'm planning on getting reverse indiglos. That's why I'm focusing on the console colors...

well.. i did sand out the gauges, and they look pretty good. i made sure that i ONLY sanded the NUMBERS and TICK MARKS (basically anything amber), so that i could save as much of the light dispersing colors (the white and black on the back of the gauges). i got all the amber out in the gauges, but the only problem is, instead of the numbers being amber, they now look like yellowish-white. that's the natural color of the gauges combined with the stock bulbs. on the tach, i tried someone's idea of using a blue permanent marker.. it looked terrible b/c it looked like purple. so i sanded off the color again, and now im all the yellowish-white. im sure there is a color paint that will look pretty good, you just need to find it (i also hear that you can cover the bulbs with sleeves to get the affect after sanding). then i sanded my needles and painted them silver. it looks pretty good b/c when the lights are on, you see the silver and it kind of fades into black. but it is pretty time consuming.. i used a dremell for all the sanding, it was faster and more accurate to get just the numbers. dont sand off too much of the light dispensers b/c then your gauges will be real dim. have not messed with the HVAC yet.. any suggestions? I will prolly try something similar on the HVAC. If I can get them reasonably close to white/clear I will look for a blue bulb first and if I can't find one I'll try to put some blue film in front of the bulb. But I'm really busy with school and all so it won't be for a while. I haven't even taken the HVAC apart to see what i'm working with so my plan might change when I finally do... Thanks for the info though.

I am the one that posted about this a while back.. i have an avenger but in case you didn't know it's all the same.. anyways.. as to the question of whether or not it looks good.. i would have to say it looks damn tight.. i get tons of compliments on it.. the amber is nasty as far as i am conserned.. when i first tried it i did it with a sharpie and as someone said it looked uneven and kinda purple.. so i sanded that off.. then i went to walmart in the crafts section they have little bottles of blue stained window paint.. i painted the back with a brush and it came out better than expected... sorry i don't have any photos to show you but i can say that if you don't like the amber then this is a worth while mod.. and if you do it right it will look good.. i also sanded the orange off of the needles and painted them blue as well.. so now they glow blue.. remember you MUST use a transparent paint like stained glass paint.. or else the light will not shine through and you will be stuck in the dark!

Well cool, at least there is someone I can ask if I get stuck somewhere. Did you do everything? Including the HVAC? If so, were you able to get to the little tick marks that are on the dials themselves? That's the only thing I was worried about.
Hopefully I'll be able to take a look at it this weekend. I'll try to take pics if I do.
