72187, Prices to have different stuff done.. shaved doors, body kit paint, etc. Posted by jamez, May-15-04 01:39 PM
OK I KNOW this has probably been asked or discussed before, i did a search and couldn't find it anywhere...
with that said, i was just wondering what a "good" or "average" price for getting some different things done..
1. shaving doors with or without paint redone
2. urethane blitz kit installation and paint (not the cost of the kit just install and paint to match car)
3. install of new pistons/rods (not price of them just installation)
4. install of a star or hrc turbo

why don't you get some friends together and do the install yourself and save money. It's not that hard. my friend just installed his turbo and body kit.

in theory that would be a great idea.
me and a friend who supposed to be "mechanically inclined" installed a completely rebuilt engine... with new rods/pistons, new crank, vatted block, ported and polished intire upper engine... and after putting it all together (over $3,000 worth of parts) it started.. and it sounded like a montser. trusting his instruction i took it around the block not taking it over 2.5 RPMS and befor i make it half way i have pieces of cracked piston blown out the rear of my exhaust.
Needless to say i took a big loss, and he of course blamed it on the guys who did the crank.. and in the end i was screwed.
So with this eclipse i'd rather not take any risky chances, id rather have pro's do all the major work. putting on a header or intake is no big deal... but pistons/rods, turbo, all that kind of stuff that has to be tuned and done just right i want a pro on.

i could see getting pistons and rods done elsewhere...alot of people are afraid of their engine IMO.
The body kit is very doable yourself dood...It will save you sooooo much monies in teh end. You are lookin at about $1000....at least with fitment, prep, and paint...A place i almost worked for would charge $300 extra for shaved door handles if you were getting a paintjob....i believe it was $500 otherwise.
Turbo kit...a local garage was gonna charge my friend $1100 to install it and tune it to "the best of his abilities."
Good luck either way...i highly encourage you to learn about your car and do it yourself...if you can't do it now, you will never learn by paying others to do it.

yea if you're prepared to have it done "right" by someone prepare to get own3d and shell out the bucks.
its seriously not hard though so i dont know why or how your friend fucked your motor up so bad, lesson learned i guess.
my .02:
get the motor out, bring the shortblock and all the internals (bearings, rods, pistons, pins lock, etc) to a capable machine shop, pay them to assemble it, then go peice it together, its a cakewalk imo...and 2gnt is here to help _________ 96 talon esi-t san clemente, ca

well today I installed my front bumper and projector headlights... tomorrow the rear bumper, tail lights, reverse lights and turbo spoiler. I never ment for you to install the engine yourself, I didn't know you rebuilt your engine. The body kit you can do yourself...it's not that much work and you feel pretty dayum good after you get it done....
Josh Spair (Turbo8u)- sorry for the delay man on getting that stuff to you. When the tails come off tomorrow I'll ship them and the caps together and you won't owe me a dime bro!

thanks for the replies guys.
i would honestly love to learn how to all this stuff, however i dont know anyone with the knowledge here to help guide me in the right path. Ive never been able to learn from reading, only hands on and trial & error.
With the escort i had they made virtually NO aftermarket things for it so everything had to be custom done. if it really was the machine shop that messed up the cranked and caused the engine to blow then i got screwed.. and what could i do i installed it with a friend.. they would just blame it on us.
installing a body kit isnt very hard but painting it myself to match the car?
I dont know, id really like to learn but i just want everyhting to be done perfect and last a long time and im not sure i have the ability myself to do it.
Ive got a price for shaved doors at one shop for $600... not to bad just wondering if its a good price or not.

600 to shave your door handles? thats nuts I paid like 150 for both, but I also put the popers inmyself and they were perfect, the dude was a minitrucker so he was used to shaving shit all the damn time
it depends on who does the body work, if you prep yourself etc i would of preped mine but im lazy and the price i got was great
back in 00 i paid 1300 mount full kit, shaved door handles and antenna mold rear and sides in paint middle tail paint mirrors
new paint job at that took them 3 weeks which sucked but was worth it for the job and price

oh yea a turbo kit, I would never pay someone else to do it
think this... if something goes wrong how are you going to know what it is, when you install your own turbo kit you will understand how everything works and what to look for in case something goes wrong
having someone else do it is pointless.. get some beer and see if you have local guys that know how to do this shit.. its not hard at all

I never said anything about painting it. F that, that's the worst part. I just did the install myself, my father's garage is painting it for me.

Where I am it costs about $300 for both door handles to be shaved
Originally posted by jamez 2. urethane blitz kit installation and paint (not the cost of the kit just install and paint to match car)
The urethane is a wonderful thing to work with cause it bends sooo easily. To be honest, if you were GOING to pay someone to do it I would not pay more than $75 because the whole kit should take about an hour to fit. $75 dollars is the going labor rate where I am. I mean, front end is 5 screws up top and 2 in both fenders + what ever supports you have. Sides, 2 in front, about 3 in door jam and 2 in back and so and and so forth. Not hard at all.
Originally posted by jamez 3. install of new pistons/rods (not price of them just installation)
That is something I personally have paid for because like someone said earlier, I am one afraid of doing anything to the internals of the motor. Plus when I got mine done I was able to get a warranty so if anything screws up due to installation its on them. Evertyhing cost about $3500 but that included all the parts, machining, port and polishing, etc. I think just installation was about $600 + taxes.
Originally posted by jamez 4. install of a star or hrc turbo
Now I dont personally have one but most of it is simple installation from what I read up on it. The only concern I would have is the oil line going to the turbo just cause if I did it myself I know i would screw something up. I would just get a case of beer and some friends that have done it and have fun on a saturday afternoon.
Hope this helps you out

so its not that hard to install a body kit, eh? good. cause im getting one and was wondering if it was hard. lol. at most what would have to be done to make it fit? i heard horror stories about these things about having to trim stuff and what not. but if you guys say its easy it has to be.

Urethane is the easiest thing to install because of its flexability but when you paint it you would have to make sure the paint shop uses some sort of flex agent in the paint because if not they paint will eventually chip off due to the kit flexing and bending in the wind while you are driving. The horror stories you are hearing deal with fiberglass kits because sometimes when the kit comes out of the mold, it is still expanding and hardening. So sometimes when you go to put the kit on it may be off by an inch or so. Then you have to cut and re-glass the kit to make it fit seamlessly. What it really boils down to is your own tastes and how much time and cash you have to spend. Good luck with your kit.

I usually charge somewhere around 150 a door for shaved door handles so about 300. that's just the labor, then you have the cost of the poppers and all.

i like shaved door handles and wouldnt mind getting it done, i know how to do prep work and how to install them, but during the winter we get shitloads of ice, and its very common to have ice-locked doors because of this. so i have to pass on shaved door handles.
if the body kit is urethane can you mold that if its a little off on shaping?

Just for your FYI jamez.. Now that you are a member of AZ 2GNT we can help you with any work you need done. We have done plenty of engine pulls/rebuilds, turbo kits, and ANY type of bolt ons. For the body kit stuff... Talk with Shawn or Todd (both AZ 2GNT members) they are the only ones in our group that have body kits. They would be good to get info about local shops.

This is true. Todd has recently done a Supra tail install. Haven't seen it in person yet, but the pictures looked nice imo. You can check them out in the photos section at the Yahoo group. :)
