70785, I remember a time when people put 9005/9006 in their reversies

A couple years a go when I first joined I remember this was a common thread. People were putting headlamp bulbs in their reverse lights. This would be really helpful where I live since cars pack together tightly, road is narrow and its always VERY VERY foggy (sometimes you can only see like 30 yds.)and I have always wanted to do it. How do you do it? Thanks.

m*a*g*i*c

LOL

I imagine you need a housing large enough to hold the bulbs and capable of handling the temperature, even if they are only on a few seconds at a time. Don't want melted shit on your ass imo.

Man, I think its the new Olds Aurora, that has bright red running lights in the back bumper that are always on..let me tell you, its the most annoying thing to stare at when driving behind one at night..it looks like they are riding their brakes all the time..very distracting..

Yeah, I know what you guys mean..I was just saying, if you would do this, then it would be kinda like the new olds..and that is distracting :) These things are as bright as brake lights, not tail running ligts/parking lights..and yeah, our reverse lights are clear stock..dont put a bright bulb in there and drive around with them on all the time or at night..that's just dumb IMO

How about Replacement LEDs? Or do they not diffuse enough to illuminate a wide enough area?

It was a bit of trouble but I was successful in modding my BU lights on my 98. I sawed off the back of the lamp and using RTV glue I sealed a 12V 50W halogen bulb (The like kind they use in some high output 12V indoor track lights). The lamps were from Home Depot and are the style that have a thin glass shield across the front to protect the actual bulb from fingers and any glass shattering if the bulb fails. They come in Flood and Spot style and I choose the Flood. Since it shines through the original plastic lense it kind of disperses the light either anyway. The bulbs produce a lot of heat but how often do you back up more than a few seconds? I tested it and figure I easily have a few minutes before the heat gets too intense. This mod makes it hard to return to stock without buying new BU lights so plan ahead. I used the special ceramic plug that comes on track lighting fixtures to hook up to the bulb and then spliced those into the original harness so it all could go back to stock with just the purchase of two new BU lenses. I already had a heavy guage wire run to the back of the car for my remote power trunk release and my sub so I installed a simple relay to keep from frying the stock reverse lamp power wires. I doubt the stock wires could handle the 100W load very long and didn't even try it. The install has been in place for about 6 months with no problems and I can see a whole lot better when backing up at night. The lamps look completely stock once installed.

i have a set of led's in mine that light up while the headlights are on. Not too bright but looks great perfect for a red car with red reverse lights.

Buy the 50 watt or 55 watt reverse lights from www.machv.com, I was on a shopping spree and picked them up, and they are bright as hell! Only like $12 too! I believe that is the same wattage as the stock 9006, isn't it?
