Well I glad I didn't go to far with this project..

Heres the situation, my dash is factory black. But the rest of the interior is grey. Last night I painted my center console, came out MINT MINT...all except for the armrest...well it came out MINT but it's sticky as hell, and has been drying for a day now, and still sticky.

What is going on? I think it has to do with the armrest being vinyl, am I right?

Any advice guys for a noob?

I wann apaint my doors but the part I wanna paint is also vinyl....dang

Yeah alot of people have had this problem. DO NOT do your doors until you figure it out! Talk to anja_star, he had/has the same problem. What kind of paint did you use? and did you put clear on the armrest? I painted mine with SEM vinyl paint and it wasnt sticky. I then put clear on it and it got sticky in the sun. I sanded that back off and just redid it with the paint and no clear this time and it isnt sticky. Also I did my dash and I never put clear on that thankfully and it has never been sticky.

i used duplicolor primer, paint, and clearcoat... it gets sticky over vinyl... and the clearcoat gets sticky in the heat...

so as soon as it gets warm ill be sanding the clearcoat off and repainting my ENTIRE (ugh) interior over in SEM..

dont use any other paint besides SEM & -no clearcoat-...make sure you spray from far away and do mupliple thin coats, allowing dry time inbetween, instead of a few thick ones...

when u sanded the clearcoat, what grit did you use... did you lose the texture form the vinyl? u should also check out some seat covers from designcovers.com, they are custom stiched and fit perfectly.. cant go wrong for 60$

I started with 100 and worked up from there and yes it took the texture off but I didnt care.

I may be hitting you up for pics of the covers.

Krylon paint...satin finish...

this thread filled up fast, check those links, alot of questions answered a pic of the can of paint I got

To fix your armrest so its not sticky is simple. First take off the old paint with paint thinner and then immediatly wash with soap and water. Then clean the oils off with an acetone or just real good with soap and water works really well. Just make sure not to touch with your hands to get any oil from your fingers on it.

Then get some Duplicolor Vinyl dye...you can get this at Walmart. They have a gloss or a flat black...you can use either I recommend the gloss. Spray the armrest with the vinyl dye just as you would if you were spraying a plastic piece with regular spray paint. Do a lot of thin coats and let dry. Apply more as needed.

See when you paint vinyl with regular spray paint it stays tacky. Just use the Duplicolor Vinyl dye on all of your vinyl panels and pieces. Plasticote makes a Vinyl dye as well if you can't find the Duplicolor. And SEM is really good too.

I used the Duplicolor to do my dash, armrest, and parts of my door panels and it turned out great. You can not tell that my dash, armrest, parts of my door panels use to be grey either. It works really well...but it doesn' work well on hard platic panels.

Ok guys...heres an update.

I painted everything with Krylon FUSION, seems to be taken VERY WELL.
The paint layered nice and it stuck to the doors and plastic like a charm. I'm VERY impressed adn pleased.

Now for the bad part, I was told AFTER I used this fusion stuff that in a few months it will begin to peal off and flake...is this true?

I was told by a body shop so who knows...any insight guys.

So far I'm impressed though, one happy customer here.

I dont know, ask a_miller76...I think he used Fusion. Ask him how his is holding up

If your not painting with vinyl paint, thats what causes it to be sticky. Just go to your local K-Mart and pick up some Dupli Color Vinyl paint, its like $3.00, and paint it with that. Good luck getting that old paint off your arm rest, been there. Just use a lot of alcohol and sand like a mofo. Good Luck!

When I painted my door panels, they kinda stuck to the dash where the door meets the vents? You know what I'm talking about I hope.
Anyway, the paint peeled off just in that little section. I used vinyl paint at first, but it looked very dull, so I went over it with Fusion. Has anyone who used just vinyl paint had a problem with it sticking to the dash and coming off?

I didn't have to paint my dash...I bought a new black one...and my door panels are so fuck nice with this fusion stuff...I recomend it to anyone...but time will tell....

The Fusion Paint works great on the plastic pieces, Don't use it for vinyl or rubber pieces will stay sticky. I painted the plastic on my doors and door sill last summer when the stuff first came out and it hasn't cracked or faded yet. I used Molecubond or something like that for the vinyl parts of the door ($7 a can/Walmart) and it matches the black dash perfectly. Remember to let your parts dry for at least a day before reinstalling them to give the paint time to bond.

Anyone know what kind of clearcoat to use on the vinyl after its painted? I used this plastikote paint from pepboys and it works really good! But if it gets dings you will see the scratch.. So anyone know a good clearcoat to go over vinyl with?

Yea, it looks great, but wait until you shut your doors...I bet it sticks like mine did with Fusion.

Whats it gonna stick to ...nothing but my doors are painted adn they were 1 day old drying when I put them in....

i had the same thing happen... i painted the vent pieces on the sides of the dash that connect to the door when it's closed. after a couple days there was paint stuck on the little rubber accordian pieces on the door. the vent's aren't vinyl, right? they're just plastic... so what's up with that?

i just used some regular spray paint and clear coat... the other trim pieces i did on the doors were fine but those don't come in contact with anything the way the vents on the side of the dash do.

This is where the paint on my door stuck to my dash. When you close your door, it touches here, and it stuck and peeled off. I havent repainted it yet, I'm going to wait until its gets warmer. I'm not sure how I'm going to redo it yet.

I didn't paint that part of the doors....I painted only the line that go with the dash....The only part that is touching is around the vent on the door that meets the dash.

I used (forgot the brand) Anodizit on my vents, rear speaker grills, and the thing around my HVAC, it's made to add an anodized look to metal by spraying it instead of sending it to a shop...for plastic and non-metal stuff you have to buy a special base-coat/primer I cleaned the vents off really well and lightly sanded(i did the lil panels where cruise control would be as well) to keep textures it looks awesome and I've had no problems, only one of the vents in the doors is chipped ,but that's because the vent is broke in one place and rubs the door every-single-time it moves...and I did the door vents on a too humid day and they look frosted..but that goes away temporarily when something like armor-all is used on 'em I'll get a pic up if anyone wants...

am I the only person who used the same auto paint from the outside of my car and clear to paint what I have done?

I used PPG 2002 Toyota 1D4 (silver)on my interior pieces.
Sanded the pieces smooth, primed...then sanded primer smooth, sprayed with sealer, then painted and cleared. It takes a hell of alot longer than spraypaint, but it doesn't flake off...ever.

No I did the same thing as you and sticky problems of course maybe it was the reducer to clear calcualtions that wasnt done right and perhaps thats why it was stick but yea i think the same paint as the outside is great and no problems vinyl or what not just make sure to add an additive for flexing such as bulldog or what not
