67959, In serious consideration of Targa top.

I read alot over at DSMtalk and DSMtooners. Well, I kinda want to go faster, the car is pretty quick as it is and I would LOVE a targa top for the summer. Is there anyone from this forum that had it done? There has to be some support for the frame. Most of the people who did this used a roll cage. I am not really interested in putting a roll cage in my car at this time. Is there any way you could support the frame? What is your input guys.:evilgrin

search noob!

oh wait....I'm like uber noob compared to you...LOL

But seriously there was someone not to long ago...a year or so ago, that did it...but like you said he had an 453248 billion point roll cage. I didn't see the point of the targa top then myself. I think they would be pimp as fuck personaly...especially with lambo doors. But I'm not gonna total out my car to have one. I really don't think you could support it well enough in the chasis to make up for the missing roof.

*edit*

I would consider a roll cage if it was made with a bar(s) right down the center...like a car with t-tops.

I have an artistic rendering of how I was originally gonna make my car...I wanted to try something different, and seeing as how targa tops needed support from a cage, I was gonna see how a T-top looked....i'll post the pic up here in just a sec....

Look up user "widebodied" he has a targa top on his car but he also has the roll cage. There are only 2 ways of doing this right, buying a eclipse spyder and putting the hatch etc on it or doing a roll cage. The reason the sypder is so much heavier than the non-convertible eclipse is due to all the frame support that it has.

another thing, hope you dont plan on going too fast. *shrug* body tweaking will own you hard unless you have the roll cage and it is done right.

In response to basically everyone. If you reread my my post, I said other ways other then a rollcage. I'm sorry if I sound like a dick. But I guess I must find this info on my own.

Na, your not being a dick, youre just denying the fact and not willing to accept the truth. We've done our research and so have the guys that have the targa tops and roll cages in the cars. If there was another way I'm sure widebodied and others would have opted for that method but there isn't.

I've been seriously thinking about it too. I have an estimating/ crash book that I've been using to compare structural parts for the coupe/spyder to see what would be needed. I thought about using the latching assemblies from a junkyard...they're $$$! Basically, my idea was to upgrade the front sheet metal(around windshield and hinge pillar) to convertible...get all the related front convertible windshield parts(weatherstrip/latches/etc.) Put a simple half cage in the rear, then chop my roof right at the back corners of my door glass, butcher it...lol...and play it by ear from there.
