Some asshole appears to have kicked a decent size dent (dry ice looks to be out of the question) in the unibody below the driver's door. I'm wondering, how the hell would I tap it out? Or would I have to cut out the metal and weld in some new?

P.S. - Yeah, I know I could cover it with side skirts, but at the moment I'm looking at solutions to repairing the actual damage, *NOT JUST COVERING IT UP*

the proper way to pull a dent like that (in rocker panel) is to use a weld dent puller. the gun weld little rivits the the sheetmetal and you use a tiny slide hammer to pull on them. a cheap puller set can cost as low as 100.00 check harbour frieght tools website. you can cut a hole behind or drill a hole in the dent to pull it out but i wouldnt. you end up fighting rust for the cars life when you open a cavity like that, just the way it works i guess. maaco will pull it cheap too, i had them pull a few of mine when i had the car repainted.

hmm, what about one of those suction cup things.... i heard those work pretty good??

the suction cup would not work because on the thickness of the metal and the curvature of the rocker. you could not get enough pulling power to pull the dent out without causing a crease. once you have a crease you might as well start heading to the body shop, crease are semi hard to get right without a lot of body fill. most of the suction cups i have seen would be too big to use anyway.


the tight radius of the rocker makes the area a tiny bit tough to repair in situations like this.
