We are thinking about making our own carbon fiber hoods.With our hood you would not have to use hood pins, because we are going to have the factory steel underneath, so our hoods are going to mount like a factory hood,and factory hoods mount the best. Our hood will consist of 1/4"inch rolled edge.And our hoods are going to cost around 475 shipped.If we start making them who would be interesed in one?

thats a good idea, but the same principle applies that the glue could become undone that attaches it to the subframe of the hood

The glue that we use to glue are other parts together holds about 1000psi per inch .The carbonfiber breaks apart before the glue gives.

Im interested..but it would be a while before i could purchase, and i would also need pics.

but how will the glue do with the constant changing in the temperatures? one of the 2 (steel or CF) may expand at a different rate, which I'd believe that they would, that would also affect the longevity of the glue...

just a couple of thoughts for you.... but I'm liking it...

They say this glue will never release from the metal and the carbon fiber.We never had problems with the glue.All the hoods i have ever seen look like junk, and the fitment is bad.Thats why my boss is going to build hoods.If you have ever bought any of our parts you will know that are parts are the best fitting and look great. My boss allways says why sould people have to go though the hasle replacing parts. If you make great parts you sould not have any hasle installing them, and you would not need hood pins?

What type of resin are you going to use? Regular epoxy resin doesn't hold well to metal, i know from experiance. Also, i don't see the point of using the metal skeleton, it will be strictly cosmetic, it won't save much weight, seeing that a good part of the weight from the stock hood comes from the skeleton.

the best way to do away with hoodpins would be to weave one solid peice if that is possible. Because either way you look at it its the fear of the glue coming apart that makes people get pins.

if i could come up with the $ i would definately buy this hood. Seems that this will be a great product.

It has before and I've MET 3 members who have lost their hoods from the CF itself tearing away. Hood pins are not hard/expensive how about some pre-holed hoods?

Wouldn't mounting it on steel defeat the Purpose of a carbon fiber hood, that being the advantage of a light weight alternative to the heavier OEM hood?

Exaclty which is why an inexpensive CF hood with some good quality would sell like spark plugs here - With some hood pins

if you advertise a hood by saying that you do not need pins, expect some trouble. The best hoods on teh market still say to use them, because the risk is ALWAYS there. Even if you use factory metel, you are still holding the cf onto teh metel frame with glue. Bad mojo IMO.

Maybe if you have a double sided cf hood with a metel frame in between the two layers? Then in between all the lines of the skeleton teh carbon fiber could be touching and perhapse use the resing itself to help kepp everything together, PLUS the glue on teh metel.

Yea, I'm kinda iffy about not running hoodpins on a cf hood. (I don't wanna go through that disaster again) Well, anyway, you doing a kind of sponsorship w/the hoods like you did for the headliners? If so, contact me AIM-pfmicks or pfmicks@msn.com...I would be very interested. Also, are you doing any other styles besides OEM..that evo hood is becoming ever more popular imo...make those too :thumbsup

Tell me bout it....u dont really wanna take chances with this expensive of a mod...( at least my vis was up there in price)...oh and BTW- VIS racing makes a GREAT hood with NO fitament problems whatsoever...so dont talk until u know for sure....

Yeh the skeleton is where all the weight is at mostly. Down at the shop we make 100% carbon fiber hoods that weigh in at 6-8 lbs!! Never more than 8 lbs. Do we use a latch for the front? No! Why? Cause you should use should pins anyhow.
Do we use a skeleton underneath? No, not even a fiberglass or carbon fiber one. What we use composite ribs that are 2-3" inches wide and 1/4 inch thick and use that as a sub-frame and laminate over that. Depending on the hood we will use a core mat also for stiffness. Yeh, there are the latches/hinges for the back like stock.
Are they strong and good enough for the track? Well, down at Frank's we make hoods and bodies for the likes of Rado, V. Ten, M. Scranton, Proudfoot and a few other well knowns.
Personally I have a hood from ProStreet and it is better than any IS I have seen, but nothing compares to the lightness of the hoods Frank makes.
