i wouldn't say they are a bitch to change out..sure the first time..but it's a DSM. It will break many times. I've gone through 1 on each side. I can now disassemble a door handle in under 10 minutes.
Here is how.. i used this 'how to' guide and it works wonders.

Alright, I will try to make this quick, yet concise.
I just recently broke off my drivers side door handle too. Going through the passenger side sucks balls. Follow the link above to help you get your old handle out. On the handle there are 2 plastic pieces going to the actual part that you grab. I broke one of those. I tried using mega jumbo super glue to hold it back together, but the spring was too strong. So I took a drill with a small drill bit and held the plastic piece up to the "handle" and clamped them together. Then drilled a hole through both pieces. Then take a small screw, probably a #8 flathead screw, very short, probably 3/4", 1" at the longest and screw it through both pieces.
I wish I had pictures, but it has been working awesome for almost a month now and it saved me $60 from satan for a new handle, and $250 from satan for labor and paint.
If this is not explained good enough, e-mail me, or catch me on MSN Messenger @ ernestdan@hotmail.com and I'll try to draw you MS Paint pictures to help out.
Good Luck

Man, I don't know how I broke mine either. That was one of the first things I read on this board when I bought my car, so I always told myself to be careful with the doors. I even "yelled" at my g/f a couple times for letting the passenger door snap. I always made sure that I pulled the door open, and then the handle down slowly into place as teh door is opening...sure enough it broke anyways.

Hehe, just curious. For those who actually broke the handles, what do u mean by going through the passenger side? Like u actually squeeze from the passenger seat to the driver side? Or u just open the door from the passenger side and then go around?

Yeah, no way in hell I'm gonna try to climb over the shifter to get in my seat...open the door from passenger side and go around, IMO

Hehehe, cool, just checking. I thought u guys were being literal about it being a "pain in the ass", like the shifter/handbrake hitting u on the ass. :P

I broke mine a week ago. Got a new handle that's currently being painted and will get back to me tomorrow so I can throw it in that night. How long will it take for a first timer anyway? I'm hoping no longer than a couple hours...

it took me and my dad about 45 minutes to get it out and back in...but it took about an hour for us to fix the old one so I didn't have to buy a new one!
