60192, If you are going to make a childish post, don't... Posted by eclipse804, Oct-12-03 08:52 AM
I've never had so many complaints about rude/childish posts as this past week. From now on, if this flaming continues, I'm just going to lock the thread. Don't let a few members ruin the board like this. If a certain member keeps causing trouble, they will be banned. Thanks for listening.

Actually, the way that Dino sets up the banning, they won't even be able to view 2gnt to sign up for another name. Banning is a last resort, but if some people don't reform, I'm going to suggest it to the rest of the moderating team.

can you ban people from certain forums, not just the entire site?

I am assuming Dino realizes you can simply connect to the site by connecting through a proxy.
So banning the internet protocol wont work.

My banned IP table can contain as many addresses as this server has drive space. if someone I ban comes back on a proxy, they better keep their mouth shut or i'll ban them again. And again. Or i'll just ban their entire class C block and see what happens.
As well, my ip collection function is extremely intuitive and can usually get the IP of the client, rather then the IP of their firewall, or the IP of their proxy. The source IP is almost always contained within the packet.
I am not stupid. I know what is out there and what is possible. I have worked in IT all my adult life. Don't worry about me finding a way to protect this site - i can hold my own.

so what exactly do you ban? The IP address? or the MAC address of the router/modem/NIC? And if it is by IP address... What about most people that have Dynamic IP addresses from their ISP?
BTW I am starting to learn some of this at school so that is why I am curious. :bowdown
EDIT* oh wait, i just reread what you wrote and understood its the IP address. But still, what about Dynamic IP addresses?

What actions would constitute a good reason to be banned? This so called flaming that has been occurring in previous days, might we see an example? Also some warnings to individuals?

You will always be warned first, usually by mentioning something about a "one-way trip to DSMTooners".

Is there a way to ban them from posting, yet still let them browse the site? Mabe for a day, week or a month depending of the violation.

I'm glad to see things have improved and people are being more mature. I'm going to unpin this now so it won't be stuck at the top all the time.
