5906, ever seen these taillights?
Posted by LunarEclipse, Jun-26-01 07:09 PM
Anybody ever seen taillights that look like Si Civic lights. I wish I knew how to post up pictures so somebody could see them. I saved the picture but I don't remember the name of the site I was at. This girl has a Spyder the same color as my GS. She painted the center piece to match and the taillights were red on the bottom and white on top. If anybody knows what I'm talking about or knows where I might find them, could you help me out. And also how do you people get pic's up here. I want to show a picture of my car. Thanks

hey I think you're right, I didn't even think of that. But first things first. What kind of red paint do you use. And how do I match my factory grey magenta for the center piece.

take the center piece to a body shop (unless you have a paint gun and know how to spray it)

use transparent spray paint, from a hobby store or from a mail order place in super street or something, my friend got some from there and it was $20 a can

Get Testor's candy apple red transparent paint from any hobby store. Its only four bucks a bottle. My friend first used some transparent paint that was 20 bucks a bottle from japan (its this removeable stuff that you can peel off later if you want), but then I told him about the testor's and that one looked way better...

No, the Testor stuff is for spray painting the clear taillights... take your centerpiece to the body shop like cyan said.

I actually tried using a paint/spray type deal before I went ahead with vinyl and frankly, it didn't turn out as smooth as I hoped, there were runs (probably cause I can't paint/spray) and within 2 wks, the candy red was pretty faded, it looked more like a stained window than a deep red look. So...with a lot of rubbing compound, and whatever else the guy at the shop gave me, I got most of the paint off my tails, and i put the vinyl on it, I've had it on for about 6 months with no fade and the vinyl actually had a warranty of 5 years of not fading...so that's my .02....Good luck with whatever you do...BTW, if you put the red on the bottom, it will not cover the reflective part of the light, which is why more cops pull us over

LAST EDITED ON 28-Jun-01 AT 00:04 AM (PST)

hey your car looks tight.that is exactly what to do and I actually like the red on the top better. One more thing though...How did you get the color on the lights so evenly and straight. Did you just leave to someone else. I would think that I might make the line uneven across the back lights. What kind of vinyl is that and where did go to get it(sorry for so many questions)...And what clear taillights did you buy and how much did they run you? Dam, I want to do this this weekend...

5915, heres what u do

go and buy the altezza style center piece.. u can usually find them on the trader for like 20-30 bux,, pop off the clear lens,, u may have to break a few of the tabs,,and then paint the back side of the clear lens,, dont sand it or scuff the surface in any way,,so when u put it back in,, it almost looks like a clear coat,, plus the paint will never chip or flake casue the paint is on the inner side of the lens,, heres a link 2 show how i did mine.. u can have a paint shop mix the paint 2 match your car get like a pint of less if they will sell it in such a lil amount

You can actually find some clears on thepartstrader.com or dsmtrader.com for anywhere between 50-100 bucks, I myself, got mine for 50 bucks (all 3 pieces).

The vinyl is called a "heat forming" transparent red vinyl, it's not that expensive and any graphics store should have some, (just go to your local auto graphics store or sign store), to get it even was a little harder than it looked, Because our tail lights have a slight dip in them and because the sides also pop out, i just laid the vinyl over the whole tail lights and heated them up. When the bubbles where gone and it was a nice fit, i took an exacto knife with a straight but flexible stick and carefully etched it out making sure that I didn't cut into the tails in case i ever wanted to take them off and sell them. Whew!! anything else? Oh yeah, I also had the red part sort of curve originally instead of being straight across, but it didn't look as good as I thought and when you're freehanding the curves they usually don't match up, so the straight across method was easier...Hope that helps!

Thanks everybody...you have been alot of help. Fast420A, thanks for the offer but my friend with a parts shop said he can get them cheaper. Thanks for the offer though.grneclipse, all I can say is the rest is up to me. And when I'm done, this style is really unique. I'm still trying to post up some pictures, but I don't have a link so I'm screwed. I got paid yesterday so this weekend I'm gonna start. If I have anymore questions I'll come back. If anybody has anymore .02, let me know.
