58413, changing color of guage lights?
Posted by LeakyMitsu, Sep-29-03 07:37 AM
hey does anyone know if its possible to change the amber bulbs that backlight the guages with white bulbs. im just not a big fan of the almost orange color.

The amber is not bulbs, it is paint on your needles. You can remove your needles and paint them whatever color you want. You can take your gauges off and sand off the orange, there are white lights underneith. Mine look like this now...

or go to www.autolumination.com and order the 74 bulb size leds that plug right in :thumbsup

sorry if the other site had 'em, i only saw the typical 5mm and 3mm bulbs on there. those work, you just gotta solder. not that hard to do but plug in is eaiser.

*edit*
oh yea they're a little more expensive too $2.50 but it's the price you pay for having direct plug in bulbs. you might wanna check whether the 74 bulb size fits everythign in the cluster and HVAC too. i know people used them for their gauge cluster but idk about the HVAC since most people did the HVAC before the #74 LED's were released. i did my HVAC w/ regular LED's and have a bunch've #74 LED's i still gotta install in my cluster.

*edit again*
lol oh yea one more thing, if you get regular LED's you need to solder a resistor inline so the bulb don't blow. w/ some've the buttons space is VERY limited so it may be a problem if you're not good w/ a soldering iron an stuff. the #74 bulbs are made to plug right in to a +12v source so you're all good. haha ok i think that's it.

2.50 is for the LED's. the regular #74 are about .99 each. I got 15 of them and did my HVAC and instrument cluster and it looks like it came fromthe factory. Definatly the way to go!!!!!!!!

Don't waste your money on the colored bulbs, compared to the LED's they look like shit! Spend the extra and get the LED's, you wont regret it.

ditto. painted bulbs never get the true color like LED's and over time they fade and look worse. plus LED's draw less power and don't get hot. can't go wrong there. if you've ever seen a painted bulb and an LED equivalent side by side it'd be pretty obvious... they make the painted bulbs look pretty good in pics an stuff but the actual light is nothing like that. it's really just regular orangish whitish light going through a color filter on the glass.

i think you missed something

YOU ALREADY HAVE WHITE BULBS! the orange comes from paint on the back of the guage.

has anyone used the led bulbs that plug in for the hvac? i was wondering cuz i didnt want to have to use regular leds and have to solder.
58630, RE: changing color of guage lights?

I have the #74 LED bulbs from the above listed site in my hvac and gauge cluster and yes they are a direct fit. They are a little longer then the stock, but they fit. Looks great IMO!

This thread has all kinds of useful info on this mod. Pretty much any question can be answered. I rated this a 5 (must read). I think this should be in TWSB. Are we missing anything along the lines of the LED mod?

I wish i knew about those bulbs before i ripped out the stock ones and soldered in radioshack led's.

That would have saved me hours of time...DOH

This is def a useful thread for anyone doing the conversion.

ORDER THE 74 bulbs. Not the painted. They burn out fast and then are useless and ugly.

Its worth the one time cost of 2.50 per bulb...trust me.

BTW...I got my needles back on and calibrated them in 5 minutes. Just have someone drive next to you at 20 mph and then stick the needle back on as your driving. Even easier if you have cruise control (I don't).

I have done this already and it is hard but I am so glad I never have to see that damn gay amber color in front my eyes again. And I didn't use ricey indiglo gauges either.

First off I had to recalibrate it and it was kinda hard but just do it right shouldn't be a problem. I bought red #93?? blubs, I cant remember the number code for blub size. But then took out the gauges. put a peice of yellow tap and marked where the needle was at. You pull the needle barely over the pin holder and see where it stops out w/o touching it. Then you mark it with tape and a pen.

#2 Sand the back of the gauges with fine grit sandpaper. Go to tuners and find which bulbs do what. Their is a diagram on dsmtuners or dsmtalk. I put the new red blubs in. Put the needles back on and put it where the tape had it marked at. Thats basically it.

Here's a pic. Pic does not do it any justice. Its very bright red at night. And their are no dark spots anywhere on the gauges.

btw the gauge it self is in silver and blends into my black/silver interior very well...

ok i know im a noob but after you replace the bulbs, that just changes the color of the guages, but not the needles? if thats the case how do you change the colors of the needles?

also how do you take apart the hvac to do that?

if you are keeping your stock gauge faces you will need to sand the backs down as well as the needles. people with indiglo gauges an stuff usually just sand the needles. both the stock gauges and needles have an amber coating on the backs. you need to shave that off so whatever color LED's you buy will shine through

So how many bulbs total do you need to light up the cluster and the HVAC? Is it 15?

Thanks,
