Man this is a total bicth...any suggestions? I'm usuing an 80 grit paper for a little bit....then attacking it with a dremel & flap wheel (80 grit), then hitting that with 120, then over that with 150, then finishing it off with 400. But it is taking forever. I have to use the dremel barely..in stroking moments. All this with a pounding headache (haven't gone to sleep yet).

Man it is a pain pain in the ass!! i didn't use a dremel just 80,180,then 320 grit....definately worth it in the end.....Also...try to sand in one direction so you don't get shitty lines throughout and also USE PRIMER!!!!!!!it will hold up 10x better to scratches and dings....I just did mine the other day....looks great and now I have to do the doors!!!

It took me forever to sand off the texture, but I'm happy with the results.

I ended up buying a Craftsman 3D sander since a normal sander won't get into all the curves. Worked pretty well, but even then took a long time.

What are all the steps you took to come to your final result?

Did you use car paint/clear, model paint/clear...what?

Wash with soap and water. cleaned with alcohol, but next time I'll use a wax/silisone remover.

I sanded off all the texture with 40 or 60 grit and then moved up to 100, 150, 220, 320 grit.

I primered it and in some places used primer filler.

I sanded that smooth with 320 grit.

I painted it. Sanded with 400 and then clear coated. Sanded with 1000, 1500, 2000.

The polished and waxed.

I used Duplicolor for primer, paint, and clear.

why sand it after painting?

Because I was using aerosol cans I was getting a lot of orange peel.

Does it affect the way the paint looks like after you clear it? Because right now I am painting the inside of my clear sidemarkers the same color as my car and I am getting orange peel too....but when I clear it will it look fine?

It depends on what your definition of "fine" is.

You can clear coat it and then polish that and it will look like a factory paint job.

How about durability? Will the paint/finish crack or spider web if you bend a piece taking it out?

if the paint you use does not have any flex aganet in it it will crank n such,

squid might not have used water but most of the time sanding after its clear coated or painted is called wet sanding...

and yes it does make a difference, that new krylon fusion should be pretty pimp for this job, and anything that is automotive thick will work..

usgins a dremol could mess it up because of the way you will sand it id use a 3d try vibrating sander or a disc sander otherwise you'll get it messed up with spots high and low...

At 320 and higher grits I did wet sand.

I honestly don't know about durability. It's been in for a little over a month (daily driver) and so far it's holding up well.

Make sure you wash the pieces well and don't handle the surface with your bare hands once it's washed because you'll leave oil on it.

Bill is right about the power tools. Once you lay down the primer you have to do all the sanding by hand.

Anyways if you always get that orange peel finish......1. Take a spray bottle 2.pour in mineral spirits.....3.if you've only got small pieces you don't need much.....but from like 4 feet away ...mist the piece....lightly....so only a fine mist lands on the piece......you will get an amazing finish guaranteed if done properly.....the mineral spirits settles the paint.......try it:thumbsup

Do this while its still wet?

Yes...let the paint sit for a minute or 2...then MAKE SURE YOUR ABOUT 3-4 FEET AWAY......SO IT'S A SUPER GENTLE MIST!!!!!

Youre tip sucks. I tried it on my headliner yesterday and now it looks like shit. Now i have to resand the whole thing and repaint it again. Thanks for the crappy advice.

will metallic still show after you wet sand the paint and then clear it?

Its the exact same paint thats on my car..only i had it put in a spray can.

Ok I have been sanding this one peice (rear seat side panel..big mothafucka) And my fingers are starting to get raw. Its there anything I can do about this? I know its kind of a dumb question but my fingers seriousely are about to bleed. Other than wearing gloves and using a powersander...can I do anthing lol?

Right now I am doing my rear panels...these are going to be black. I will have black and my exterior paint color on my doors and such when I do those. regular car paint should work fine as far as I know.

I know I did all my panels months ago and my fingers are still raw from sanding.

Don't blame the shitty job on me. If my hand sprayed the paint then fine. Miner worked awesome and I've gotten the tip from a reputable painter. I've used this technique at least 5 times with great relults. Sorry to hear:shrug

ok back when I had my eclipse many moons ago, I painted the whole interior..

since i had a silver car i had the ghetto light blue..

all the small pieces I sanded smooth because I wanted it to look shinny and nice.. the big ones I did sand a bit to rough up the plastic..

But if you use good paint I see no reason to sand down the big pieces you will just be wasting your time. I cant tell you what paint to use since I have not used every paint out there

but most auto store paints are crap, cept duplicolor black, it was so shinny and smooth that i fell in love

but for silver which is what I used on the big pieces I used SEMS, thats real deal shit.. 8 bucks a bottle but well worth it

I hated the sems black it wasnt shinny.. I wanted the small parts to be shinny.. I also used duplicolor clear coat because I didnt like the sems clear

my steps.. really fast
clean all pieces, simple green or soap n water.. rubbing alch works goood too.. you want to get all the crap off the interior panels and the glue thats on them.. most of it should be gone just from being in the sun and what not

start with a rough grit, this was over 2 years ago so forgive me but i forgot what I used..
rough it up.. then smooth it out over time

I never wet sanded after I painted or clear coated for I never had to

but I gave the panels a nice 1500-2000 wet sand before i ever put paint on it


but do that then clean it again then apply paint

make sure you give it nice even coats, from a good distance away.. you dont need to paint it all on the first coat.. just get some paint on there to start a good base.. let it dry for about 15-20 mins.. while you are waiting start to sand more pieces

but try not to do it next to it, because it makes more dust

Ok, do you guys really think that sanding parts down and getting rid of the texture looks good? Maybe its just me but when I change the colour of my interior parts I want them to share teh same texture as the rest of teh panels....Otherwise I think it makes them stick out to much, and kinda ugly...am I the only one? Why do you guys think it looks so good to have them sanded? and its so not worth the work!

I am sanding down everything. Everything will be smooth. My dashboard is being glassed with costom gauge pods and shit. So nothing will retain its original texture.
