56370, Center Console Removal Posted by blinkbizkit500, Sep-01-03 05:53 PM
Hey guys, how do I remove the center console out of my RS? I have a center console w/ the flipdown lid that I want to put in my car, and I was j/w how hard it is to get the center console out. Are there any screws or anything, or do I just yank it out? I saw that when it gets up by the radio it looks like there may be some tabs or something from the center console behind my din plate. I have an aftermarket HU that bestbuy installed, is there anything I should be careful for? If anyone has a write-up that would be great. Thanks a lot guys!

there are 6 screws total to get the center console out. 2 of them are on the sides near the back. They are by the seats. Then you have to remove the ashtray/cup holder and there are 2 screws under there. Then remove the plastic trim piece around the hvac controls and radio. There should be 2 more screws under there. Plus you have to remove the shift knob and unplug the cigarette lighter and light in the ash tray. That should be it. It isn't hard at all and it can be done in 5-10 minutes. Hope this helps.

pry off the radio trim panel (the black piece) w/ a flathead that has a thin piece of cloth wrapped around it (to prevent gouging). you will then see the mounting tabs for the center consol under there. take out those screws and set them aside.
then pull out the cupholder/ashtray assembly. youll see two more screws. remove 'em.
push both front seats forward and youll see a round screw cover on each side on the back of the consol. using the flathead/fabric concotion, pop off the covers. remove the screws.
the console is now "free". the hardest part is manuvering it out. you will have to put the e-brake up at first, and move the shifter to the rear-most position. carefully push the consol backwards and then lift it up. you may have to play w/ the e-brake and shifter to get it out, but it should be easy. also, remember to disconnect the cig-lighter when you fisrst get it pulled up a bit. there are two wires connected to it.

while im at it, i'll ask another stupid question lol. The way to put the console I have to put in with the flip down lid goes back in the same way right? It will take the same screws in the same holes and i won't have to do anything else? the new console im putting in came out of a gsx if that matters. thanks!

i put the console in today, looks great thanks for all the help guys. The one thing that i noticed is my cigarette lighter isn't working. The light isn't working either to light up the ring around it. I guess I did something wrong, but I'm in no hurry to fix it really, I never use it. Thanks a lot guys.

when you removed the original center peice, You would have had to unplug the wires from the back of the cig lighter. when you installed your new center, you must not have remembered to plug these in.
