55396, Hot or Not? What do you guys think? Posted by Rice_Rocket, Aug-17-03 02:42 PM
Hey guys,
I made a lip similar to the RM racing chin spoiler. It's different that it fits right onto the 97-99 bumper without compromising clearance (where the RM lowers your front 2 inches). It's made out of heavy plexiglass, looks good, is super durable, and is 3 piece in case of any major smashes :)
What do you guys think? I posted it up on ebay and got a lot of questions but no bidders :( Any improvements to be made? Cost is $120, and believe me, the plexi cost is close to that!

Wow, replies already.. funny how I wasn't notified by email. :) Anyways the install is EASY! there are fittings for the factory bolts on the bottom of the bumper. So, here's the install:
1) Jack up front of the car, put jackstands up.
2) unscrew 8 bolts? on the back part of the bumper
3) Using the factory screws, screw it back into the metal support piece in the bumper. This is the initial fit, now move it a little either way to adjust the positioning so it looks one piece.
4) Tighten! Now they're fixed in place.
5) Take 10 or so self tapping screws (will also be provided) and screw the front part into the bottom of the bumper (extra support) You may want to use nuts and bolts if you really abuse the bumper and the screws fall out.. I've crash tested it and they're fine as is.
6) Make sure it is pretty, enjoy! (For those of you who might have smashed up the bumper and metal support it might not fit straight or level.. you'll have to screw in some metal plates on the back to get them to level out. I will provide that too, that would actually require a drill. Otherwise you just need a ratchet, jack stands, and a jack.
Maybe I should put together a list of people interested (I have to make 5 at a time from the manufacturer) Email me: kwoks88@hotmail.com

I give you props for doing custom work and giving fellow 2gnters more options...but, i personally dont like it. Doesnt flow with the bumper imo. i think it would look better if the dip in the middle was filled. Just my opinion though.
Could you post more pics from different angles???

I agree with bmpdirk. Looks good but would look much better if the center wasn't cut out.

Thanks for the input! Ronnie, no prob on the lip, I'll get 5 in, and you'll be the first one I'll call! Maybe we can use your car for pictures to add to the instructions :)
As for it warping, it's high quality plexi, and with the Boston weather, it's been on for 4-6 months already, HOT! No warping or bending.

You'll see more angles of it. As for the design with the cut-out it was for two reasons: One, to make it different and flow better in case you mangle your bumper (it's 3 pieces) And the second was in case of steep ramps or bumper blocks, with the cutout it helps more with clearance and hitting things, gives it also the chance of saving a portion of it in case you decide to kiss something with it.
I don't know many 95-96 people, and since the front ends are more the "smiley" face, I am not sure what I could do in the lines of a design for them. I could add a curved lip to the middle, but I think that would just accentuate the front and make it more "shark like" ;) If you have ideas please send me a photoshop of one so I can look into it!
I've gotten a few private emails, looks like the first 5 might go right away!
Please email me if you're interested, I might get another 5 made.

If you blend the corners into each other on the indented part you might get a better respone from it...I think it would look tight like that anyway.:thumbsup
Something like this. (As viewed from the top)

Nice drawing Kent,
The sideways pic I have doesn't do it justice. The ends of each side actually taper out and the middle flares out. This design is so that if you don't get it matched up exactly even on both sides due to each bumper being different, then it won't look so fugly.
Check out the lipvsrm.jpg picture in the link I put earlier. I just previewed my posting and it's huge, don't want it to eat up the space on 2gNT.

Nah,
CF is not strong enough to make a lip out of. It will crack and get destroyed too easily, and won't work well in three piece style. I think for durability's sake the plexi is the best bet. I can make it in lexan at a higher cost, but it doesn't really affect strength too much at all.
