Ive decieded to keep the stock tailights, but was hoping to do the DIY center piece light mod, but I was thinking. Wouldn't it be easier to buy a cheap small 5 inch neon tube and mount it in the center piece? I was thinking of simply splicing the power wire into the outer parking lights, since they are always on. How much power would a neon tube draw?? Opinions?

I've thought about it, but haven't had much of a chance to try anything- there are some pretty serious size constraints working with that centerpiece.

If you try it, let me know how it comes out, and possibly send me a part number for the neon you used, as well as a manufacturer. I've wanted to do something like this for a while.

I have now spent in excess of $150 trying to illuminate that center and make it look good. I have tried multiple regular light bulbs, 200 LED lights (I am an electronics nut so I had to try it), and 2 15" neons! What went wrong with each?

The regular bulbs created spots. Meaning that it was just sopts of light and not fully illuminated. Keep in mind that I filled the back of the center piece with a pice of a chrome rocker panel (Super polished stainless) and it still was too condensed!

The 200 LEDs looked fantastic! The problem? WAY too much current draw! :( Was burning up the driver circuits!

The neons had 2 major problems! The first was that the protective covering was way to big to fit inside of the casing. Plus the center piece is curved from side to side so even after removing the tube from the clear case it did not fit well. The other problem was that it only appeared as 2 lines of light (I used 2 tubes).

If any of you figure out a good way to do this I would love to hear it! If I figure it out I will let you know!

The mod listed on the mods page about this works pretty well.. from a distance, it does look like two points of light in the centerpiece, but up close it illuminates rather well. I went back and revised it using two bulbs and the matching sockets mounted in the upper corners and it looks alright.. One thing that may be worth trying is removing more of the reflective paint from the inside of the centerpiece and "masking" it with some sort of wax paper or milkly plastic to diffuse the light better and give more diffused illumination.
