Due to a really bad paint job, the paint is now flaking on my front bumper cover. I can save a lot of money (about $200-$250) if I can strip the cover myself. (and then just pay to have it painted)

Does anyone know if sandblasting our bumper cover will damage the bumper cover at all, or make it too rough to paint and have the paint smooth?

Also, a couple of the body shops I talked to mentioned a possible chemical agent inside the cover of some imports that is released if sanding too deep. This agent makes it difficult to make paint stick. Does anyone know if our bumper covers have this agent?

The cover was painted brand new, so it wasn't released the first time (if our cover even has it).. the paint job is just bad.

sand blasting?? well as far as I know.. There are booths for sand blasting... and You've to take anytype of grese or paint off prior to sand blasting it. I could be wrong.. but that's what I've been tought at my school.. anyways..

You can always wet sand the bumper... WHICH requires.. alot of patience... I'm not really sure about what agents they are talking about.. but usually, you put bumper coating on it prior to painting it.. which helps the paint stick to it..

Ya just wet sand the whole thing down, and then the shop can shoot a layer of primer, and then paint..

What would I need to buy to wet sand it down? A standard waxer/polisher and some agent?

I don't have the materials, but if I can get them for cheaper than paying the place to do it themselves, I'd rather do the work myself and have the waxer.

hehe.. I think you only wet sand with hands :) right marcus? if not I'd like to know someother way too.. :) anyways.. You need some Sand paper and Water. and you are on your way.. just make sure.. clear coat is off.. and whatever paint is left on the bumper is reallllllly thin layer.. or.. take it all off... Prime it (FLEX PRIMER) and paint it.

I hate wet sanding!!!

Damn.. I thought there might be some way with either a buffer or a electric sander...

Yup you need to wet sand gently with your hands, or you could burn the bumper using powerful tools. You definitely have to use your hands because there are a lot of curves and crevices etc. Shouldn't take you more than 1 or 2 hours though...good luck...
