its the rear shelf that comes up when you open your trunk and goes down when u close it..it covers up whats inside your trunk so that no one can see your goodies .

Well I work full time and don't really have the time or motivation to start a production line, but I will make a kick ass all-inclusive write up including parts needed, parts numbers, and what tools you need etc. Give me a few days to write it up. Jesus Christ you guys.


Take off your rear hatch cover.
Remove all of the bump stops and pull off the carpet.
Use a putty knife to scrape away any remaining residue from the glue or any pieces left stuck to the wood.
Sand it down.
Paint on a coat of resin.
Lay over your sheet of carbon fiber and use a roller tool to make sure it's fitted into the curves.
Paint on a second coat of resin.

Let cure.

Trim and sand the edges.

Sand the surface to get it even, then wet sand it smoothe.

Clear coat it.

Then buff that bitch down.



I haven't done it yet but it's not that fuckin hard to do. If you get the concept of laying vinyl or carpet it's just the same but with a couple extra steps and materials.

That would be a seriously bad idea, unless your passenger side airbag is completely non functional. Carbon fiber, while strong has a high shatter ratio. If an airbag was released and came bursting through a carbon fiber cover, it would splinter and the passenger would be killed with thousands of tiny razor sharp needles of carbon fiber and probably would have their head cut off, and their eyes gouged out their tonge sliced open.... you get the point!!

So anyway, it looks really good! Where do you get CF from and do you use the same resin as fiberglass?

I got the carbon fiber from a distributor who had overstock from a racing car company. Pretty good deal. Also you can't use the same resin used for fiberglass.

I am working on my writeup now with parts numbers and pics and everything... should be done soon.

the passenger airbag cover blows up and away so the bag can come out. I don't think covering it in cf is gonna effect anything.

When you say you cant use the same resin that is used with fiberglass, then what kind of resin can I use? Also how long approx will the whole process take from start to finish? Im thinking about doing my center armrest as well, is this the same process?

well i am trying to kill some one and make it look like an accident.

it shouldnt shatter, when the air bag comes out the cover flips up, and if you air bag is curled it more than likely at one time the bags were deployed.

how about a c/f sun visor, or a c/f sunroof cover, like the inside slider thingy

Ok to clear a few things up. I have been working with CF for quite some time so i can answer some of these. First off, it's not recommended to use polyester resin (what comes fiberglass), it won't bond well with the CF. You must use epoxy resin, epoxy resin is also what all fiberglass body kits are made with, it's alot stonger and bonds better. Also, to get the best results, you wouldn't want to "cover" your stock part with the carbon fiber, the epoxy doesn't stick well to plastics or vinyl and will eventually seperate, therefore, you would need to smooth the stock piece to use as a plug, then make a female mold, and THEN you can lay-up the CF IN the female mold to get the semi finished product (pre clear). Other than it seperating, laminating the stock piece isnt a good idea because it involves alot of build up and sanding then clear coat etc.. If you make a good mold thats smooth, it can be done in one process, and clear coated afterwards. Djtricky contacted me about making these already because he doesnt have the time. I would be interested in making replacement rear shelves if people were interested. But, i've seen this before. Everyone was all about the CF headliner and when i posted for a group buy there was only 1 person that was going to follow through. The thing is everyone says the price is too expensive, but if you knew about making these you would understand. Anyway DJtricky, your's came out VERY nice, i would like to see pics of how it looks installed. I might have to make one of those for myself.

Yea i got mine from a dude who was selling his overstock cf on ebay.
I dont know if he still has any listed, but I contact him through email and bought a bunch from him. If you buy cf from ebay make sure you are getting the right kind/weave/strandcount etc. And make sure they send it rolled not folded.

It's a bit harder for the average person to go out and buy all the materials needed. That looks pretty nice. If you guys are really interested, I could see if I could get it produced, but I would guess the cost would be around $150 for a custom produced cf piece. I don't know how to do it myself though, since I've never worked with cf.

I think everyone's best bet is BCI... he can and will do it for you guys.

That was completely unnecessary, i didn't say anything about you, so the dumbass comment was not needed thanks, i was just stating that as with most things on ebay it prolly won't be good quality. I didnt read that he got it from there, but sometimes you get lucky and can find some thats good. But as i stated, i wouldn't suggest buying CF from just anyone on ebay, i prefer reputable composite dealers. Sorry if you thought i was running my mouth...

Anyway, i started making a mold of my stock shelf today and will finish the mold tomorrow or thursday. After it cures i will post pics of the mold so you guys get the idea. The actual finished piece is going to take a week or so. I'm just trying to figure out what i can use for the pins that clip in the hatch. Right now i'm looking at say $150-$180, but if i can get enough people to order, it will drop. Thats just an estimate, so don't back down yet, because as i said it will most likely be cheaper. I'll keep you all updated. Thanks Djtrickee for putting this in my hands, i was looking for some new projects. I'll make sure i repay you somehow :thumbsup .
