No more need to do the led mod for the gague cluster!
http://autolumination.com/194_marker.html

They look kinda long, but it won't hurt to try. I will let everyone know how they turn out when I get them!

Can you use those bulbs to do the HVAC mod....Will they just slide into the spot where the stock bulb was?? Thanks
52171, RE: Finally! #74 LED bulbs!
Posted by jerseystyle1, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Well that's what they say. They claim to be direct replacements for the # 74 bulb which is the bulb that goes to our HVAC and our instrument cluster. I ordered them today and will let everyone know if they work!:thumbsup

Can someone give me some stats on these bulbs? Amount of power they draw? The brightness rating?

And also, I planned on doing the background bulbs in white and the needles (only) in blue, can someone give me a diagram or a write-up?

Thanks,
Corey

I just ordered 6, but you really don't need to change the warning lights out, so I think 4 would probably be enough. Not exactly positive though!

you will need about 7 leds to get all the gauges converted.. speedo, tach, gas, and water temp... also you will still need to sand the backs of the gauges if you go with any color other than red...

writeup is here..
http://www.iamnotwhoiam.net/PhotoAlbum/Cars/Jason/projects/Dash-lights/Led-Gauge-Cluster/led-gagues-writeup.html

and the gauge bulb placements...

Do you get any light spots from the leds? I have seen a few mode that used leds and the guage is real spotty. Has anyone tried the blue incandescent bulb?

'98 GS, Altezza backs, Blue HVAC+, no real mods, yet....
52428, RE: Finally! #74 LED bulbs!
Posted by Pitchblack98, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
i have seen some give off spots. since LEDs dont give off any heat you can take a very small piece of black electrical tape and put it in the end of the LED (very very small like a chip) and that solves the spot issue.
52435, RE: Finally! #74 LED bulbs!
Posted by invaznGST, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
EVERYONE POST PICS..AND IF YOU NEED TO DO ANYTHING BESIDES PLUG THE BULBS IN..if they aren't just 'plug and play' bulbs..then im not gonna bother..but if it's something easy then i'll do it..im not into looks but if it's easy i'll do it..if i gotta solder and sand and weld and shit..then fawk that.
52438, RE: Finally! #74 LED bulbs!

also tell us if they appear bright enough, b/c it's hard to guage that with pics. tia!

Go ahead and order them InvaznGST they are plug and play. I myself Have Reverse Indeglows gauges so I didnt sand down my stock gauges, if you want your needles to glow blue you will need to take those off and sand them down. you guys must be careful cause I messed up my temp gauge trying to take off the needle.x(

yeah if you have stock gauge faces then you will need to sand the backs of them for the blue to work as stated in my previos post.. along with sanding down the backs of the needles..
52483, RE: Finally! #74 LED bulbs!
Posted by jerseystyle1, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Hey flyinESI or anyone else, were you able to sand the needles with out taking them out. I have heard it's a pain in the butt to put them back in and I really don't want all that hassle. Let me know!
52495, RE: Finally! #74 LED bulbs!
Posted by thug1205, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
HOw do you get the needles out....I tried and they dont come out...I dont think I am doing it right...can someone explain to me how they got theirs out....Thanks
52496, RE: Finally! #74 LED bulbs!
Posted by thug1205, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I sanded my needles without taking them off and then I painted them with this green paint that is made to paint light bulbs with....it worked fine...my needles are green and looks really good...I didnt even change to the led bulbs yet because I haven't received them yet..

flyinesi, nice choice in gauges and needles -same as mine
52508, RE: Finally! #74 LED bulbs!
Posted by FlyinEsi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM

Hey guys, these are www.speedhut.com gauges and www.importintelligence.com needles. I did have to take the needles out to sand them...probably not if all I was doing was the needles, but I put in the gauges too so I took them off. The whole job was a piece of cake, but I have that crappy orange color that surrounds the mileage and comes thru the gauges if I turn the brightness up, so I need the blue LED bulbs bad...I really hope that works out, that would be sweet!!

The needles are actually kind of a pain in the ass to get back in the right spot. I didn't know about the whole let them dangle straight down and get them lined up again, so I pulled over a cop in town, had him lead me to 30 mph and when he hit 30 he stayed there and his lights automatically came on! From there I had a program that told me what rpms I should be at. I will get that right on next time I go home because my dad has a toy that tell you what rpms you are running exactly.

Also as you can see, my temp gauge isn't quite right, it should be horizontal, but that is as high as it goes, and my fuel needle is catching on something and that is as far as it goes down...thank god my fuel low light still works :)

Does anyone have pics of the stock gauges done with the green leds?? Thanks
52514, RE: Finally! #74 LED bulbs!
Posted by totaleklipse97, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
hey as for getting off the needles best way is to use 2 spoons.. i know it sounds crazy but it puts equal lifting pressure on both sides so u don't screw up ur needles. so take 2 spoons (thin) and put the round tips under the black round part of the needle. gently push down the handles of the spoon, GENTLY!!! this will pry up the needle where u can sand away at the back and DO NOT USE NAIL POLISH REMOVER!! no matter how easy u think it will be it make em look like crap. just put the needles back on at normal operating temp. and it should be horizontal on the temp guage like he said and wherever u left ur gas gauge at. i used the rpms guage to set the mph and i was pretty damn close. let ur car fully warm up and take note at where ur car idles. and before u remove ur needles get ur car in a set gear and a set rpm and find out what speed u are at i.e. like in 3rd gear at 3k rpm ur at 45mph. and REMEMBER that. after ur done guage how close u are by what u set earlier. so like say u did 3k rpm in 2nd gear was 30mph use that. i got a question for the guys that did the importintelligence needles, i did mine too but mine don't seem to glow as nice as ur's what did u do after u sanded the needles??/ cause i was thinking of totally sanding the needles and taping off the sides and spray painting them very lightly with a translucent blue?? let me know what u guys did cause they look sweet!!

Posted by FlyinEsi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Hey dude, I didn't even sand my needles, I took a hunting knife and just scraped off the old orange paint. Gently scraped off the paint. Then I bought some white paint in a little pen-like thing and painted the bottom and sides of the needles.

FlyinEsi, next time you get a chance, let your car warm up for about 5 minutes, then you can just stick the needle on the even place, you prolly stuck it on when the car was cold, so when it warmed up it went to the top right?
52914, RE: Finally! #74 LED bulbs!
Posted by FlyinEsi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Thanks for the advice :) I actually had it all warmed up, drove around for a few miles on the interstate, but I think when I put the needle on, I moved it a little bit and didn't get it right...the fuel gauge is getting stuck on something too...dammit, I've taken it out like 2 or 3 times now to fix it and it is always still stuck. I'll figure it out one of these days though.

got my leds today and put them in. they look great. should of just waited before ordering my speedhut gauges. it would have worked for about half the money. anyone interested in these leds, and doesnt mind doing any sanding on the needles, or even the needles and the gauges get these. i will post pics as it gets darker so you can see. thanks jersey for looking out for the release of these leds. :thumbsup

Hey, do the LEDs have bright spots? I'm gonna pick up a few too but I was wondering if I should get the LEDs or the incandescent bulbs. I don't want bright spots :P
53069, RE: Finally! #74 LED bulbs!
Posted by MCubed45, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
inacdescant bulbs will NOT give you the true color of an LED. if you don't want spotting simply sand the tip of the LED. you can change the shape of the plastic depending on how you want the light to be dispersed. it's not that hard to do. painted bulbs are a waste. they look like crap when you get them and as time passes they begin to look worse.

haha plus LED's don't get hot

I put some of these bulbs in and they are brutally spotty. I tried the trick of putting a little chip of electrical tape on the end but it didnt make any difference. Anybody know of any other tricks to get the light to disperse better?

chrysler, i believe for gsts its 65 mph at 3000rpm in 5th gear. i calibrated mine, and im only 3 mls off, and my tach is about 100 off, and im glad you figured out the leds work. i didnt have a prob with them, and they are pretty good. better than putting in regular leds and blowing your dimmer switch twice because you were not careful...,,i hope it helps you out a little. just set your tach at idle and go from there. and go to an emissions station pay 20 bucks and maybe they would set it for you, i know i would if you lived in ct....:-) :thumbsup

Posted by MCubed45, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
LOL yes they are a bit of a pain to install but they ARE plug and play and are still easier than soldering in some regular LED's and resistors. and the color's better than regular incandescant bulbs. for anyone who's planning on swapping your bulbs - the stock bulbs are iside of a holster. it's the black plastic piece that you twist when removing the bulb. the part that comes out of the holster is jsut the glass bulb itself. you need to keep that black holster and stick the replacement LED's inside. kinda hard to explain but you'll see when you take out the bulbs.

also BE SURE TO CHECK POLARITY. led's are biased and will NOT WORK if they are installed backwards. this is not a problem with regular bulbs so there aren't really any markings on the holder thingies. either trace the lines on the backing of the cluster to find your ground and +12v OR just go through trial and error. if you plug it in and it doesn't turn on like it should - it's backwards.

i drew up a pin out for everyone to see..here is the thread, if it does not work email me @ bpetrey104@aol.com and i will send it to you...hope this helps with the polarity issue......
