51232, horn buttons don't work (well)
Posted by robinj, Jun-24-03 06:46 PM
got cut off by an old lady the other day (oh, the shame...) my right horn button hasn't worked since I got my car a few months ago, the left one's getting more funky. I ended up using my intake as a horn, she got the point. :D so, my question is how to go about testing the buttons, i.e. would I remove some panel on the wheel?
I was hoping the guy that stickered my car earlier today wouldn't ask for the horn, since I knew the buttons suck... fortunately he didn't. regardless, I might've been asking this earlier in the day.

I think I know what you're talking about. When you hit the horn they sort of crackle, right? They just don't seem to stay on constantly and you feel like a doosh when you use them. I would suggest disconnecting the battery and waiting about 5 minutes before you mess with any wires near the wheel. :o You could get an vohm meter out and find the horn wires to check for continuity then. Good luck. Let me know what happens, mkay? :P

how would I go about getting at the horn wires themselves? I suspect it's the buttons or contacts inside the wheel, but I couldn't figure out how to get at 'em. and, yes, the left button does that brief crackle and doesn't stay on... the right side's completely dead.
I'll have to borrow a multimeter from radioshack sometime.

yea i have the same problem with the shitty buttons on the steering wheel. they suck, i have to press them in really hard sometimes to get them to work.. lol. i was thinking of just rewiring new buttons somewhere on the back of the steering wheel for the horn instead.

i found that pushing them both in at once works much better than just hitting one (either the left or right) by itself.
