ok, got this black tar dripping out of the door panel.x( . took the door apart and found that it is some type of sealant or adhesive that holds a plastic sheet in between the metal and the door panel. does anyone know why this is there and if i can remove it? or should i just take it off and scrape the sealant out and put it back on with a different type of adhesive? any help would be appreciated, tired of cleaning tar off the door jam . thanks

I took mine to the dealer and bitched that it was fucking up my clothes and how I wanted it fixed or I wanted a new car. It happened like a month after I bought mine. Take it to the dealer and have it fixed for free imo. It's a bitch to get that stuff out. Oops cleaner works pretty good on it tho if you wanna DIY.

If it's under warrenty they'll fix it. The same thing was happening to my car. They "fixed" it. I started to notice new drips again though.

I'm just going to find some other adhesive to use.

take all that shit out...you dont need it. the plastic liner is a bitch to get out; use a knife to cut around the seems, then use an exacto to cut off as much of the black gunk as you can. finish up with goo-gone or similar. after 4 years and several near-hurricanes ive never noticed a problem with mine.

I told them what the deal was. I just got the car, and this stuff's melting out everywhere. Fix it or do something about it to fix me up, even if it means another car. I put the boot to their ass. They fixed it. :thumbsup

Mineral spirits takes that stuff right off. That "goo" is called Butyl, its a sticky, rubbery adheasive found on almost every kind of car. Back in the day, windshields used to be installed with this stuff, before urathane was introduced. I use this Butyl at my shop, as the sealant on a sunroof flange. Yeah, its gooey as hell when it gets warm enough.. Mineral spirits desolves it completly though.

Yeah, take it to them and tell them to fix it so you can end up like me having duct tape holding that shit on :rolleyes

Just take the fuckin plastic out...jeez...it's not even usefull. I've taken it out of every vehicle I've ever owned and never had a problem.

the plastic kinda acts as a type of sound barrier. it might not make that big a difference but i could tell. i installed aftermarket power windows and had the plastic off while installing them. when i tested the motors with the plactic still off it was very noticeably louder than with the plastic sheeting and door skin on. the plastic sheet made a much bigger difference quieting the motor noise than the door skin itself. i'm sure using dynamat or some similar product would do a much better job of quieting things down but i just wanted to point out that the sheet does make a difference. i never had problems with the black goo dripping though (prolly b/c it doesn't get THAT hot here)...
