49418, I'm creating a new bumper, opinions sought

Hey 2gnters,

I'm embarking on a mission to design a bumper that suits the overall style of a 2g. There are cool designs out there - but most are too flashy for my tastes or too boxy and jagged for the eclipse's organic lines. Nothing really suits me. I want to know what you guys think.

My favorite bumper is still the OEM one, but I really like the r34 fronts, and ryan hes' front. On other cars, my inspirations are the veilside supra center intake, ferrari modena side intakes, and jaguar or shelby cobra ovalish style's. So I've designed a mix of all those - very curvy but still kinda understated. I'm not posting pics yet b/c I'm undecided.

My goal is something really clean - no excess of any kind. So no non functional lips and spoilers, no side markers, and no 5" round holes for stadium fog lights. In fact, if fog lights were to be mounted, I want them recessed into the bumper in a semi hidden kind of way - like a c5 corvette.

I'm making this for myself, but since I will make a mold, I could make many more. So I thought why not see what you guys want. For example, you may like side markers - but if I don't put them into the mold, you could just cut them out yourself and install say those BMW arrow side markers instead of eclipse ones.

I already have a spare bumper, and I've started to mold out the details with clay. The final part will be made with poly resin and fiberglass.

Here's the in-my-dreams part - Once I am comfortable, sometime I may even start making these out of epoxy resin and carbon fiber. There are numerous difficulties in working with cf, like vacuum bagging, but it's not rocket science by any means. I think it would be cool to have a cf front bumper at a more realistic price than what's out there.

Kinda off topic, but i have a spare 97-99 street fighter front end (Just like ryan hes) for sale. Btw your using clay? I thought you would of used fiberglass for body work.

yea ck, scoops are funtional. in fact I wanted to just say eff it and make the front exactly like a ferrari modena, but that would mean no center scoop hence no radiator air flow or FMIC guys. would be cool for SMIC guys though! and perhaps I could just duct the right scoop towards the radiator...hmmm

clay, I'm just making the prototype with clay. the mold and final piece will be made out of fiberglass.

I should post pics of all the different ideas I have, and have you guys vote. The simpler the design, the easier it will be to make from carbon fiber. laying down cf in curvy/complicated positions would be a PITA

hey whatta guys think about losing the bumper reinforcement??? Should I try really hard to leave it on?

Nah, I'm not too worried about the front one. The rear one is semi-important to me... but no big deal. If possible, keep it... but I wouldn't waste too much time on it if I were you. Almost every aftermarket bumper makes you lose it anyway... well except mine of course :).

CF bumper would be hott as hell I think... but possible CF overload...

I'm not the hugest fan of CF though, so don't really listen to me. Poly-urethane what?

Yeah.

Good luck, and show us pics of how its going and your ideas, input would be nice, you know?:thumbsup

If you could make a fully custom, doesn't look like anything else, and really compliments the car (not just makes it look like a space ship) I'd be interested in buying one.

You should REALLY post pics. Not just to vote, but there are a few artists on here (HI) that could help you or we could just bounce ideas off each other.
