I finally installed the AutoVation Pedals. The single biggest pain in the ass to date. But most of it was my fault.

Here is what the pedals looked like when I first got them:

But I didn’t like the tooling marks much and decided to polish them. Plus I thought the dead pedal would look better without the raised edges so it looked like the gas pedal more. The tooling marks are pretty deep and I wasn’t able to get them all out of the dead pedal. But after more than a day of sanding and polishing I got more or less what I wanted.

Attaching the dead pedal is easy. Just drill four 1/8” holes and attach with the provided screws:


Attaching the clutch and brake pedals was a different story. First I had to remove the rubber covers (I never new they were just rubber covers) and drill 3/16” holes through the steel pedal. But drilling through the steel backing of the pedals is a real fucking pain. Get a good drill and drill bit for the job. I didn’t have either so I had to go and buy them. It took me way too long to drill the first hole. I picked up a drill bit that was meant for metal drilling, but it wasn’t doing shit so I had to make yet another trip to Home Despot:


The instructions say to attach the gas pedal the same as the dead pedal. But the gas pedal is just like the gas and clutch pedals, a rubber cover over a steel pedal. I tried to attach it to the plastic cover, but there just isn’t enough material there so I had to remove the cover and drill through. It turns out the hole at the top doesn’t work out too well since the arm of the gas pedal is right behind it. I managed to half-ass the third screw in though:

Overall I like them and I think it was worth the trouble. I wish AutoVation would re-arrange the screws on the gas pedal (two on top, one on bottom). And also they should include more spare screws. I had to go out and find philips flat head machine screws and lock nuts to attach the gas pedal since they had included only self tapping screws for the gas pedal. I couldn’t find socket head flat heads today.

Looks good. Taking the driver side seat out makes the install alot easier; alot less contorting.

molded to the metal of our pedals? cuz my friend got me some pedals
but they didnt have the curve and stuff of ours so i didn't wanna

The pedals are Aluminum and are curved to fit our pedals. The gas pedal wasn't curved enough, but nothing a rubber mallet couldn't fix.

Great job on the install. I still have mine sitting in my garage waiting to be installed.

I liked the matte, but I didn't like that you could see the tooling marks through the matte finish.

hmm i can't decide if i want the plain or the matte finish...
do you think they'd let me return one if i just order both? :P the pics on their site are great - nice and big. but nothing compares to seeing stuff in person...

pedals are very nice though. nice having some custom pedals made for our cars instead of the generic universals stuff. :thumbsup

yup, they were even nice enough to follow up on my request to make the RS-T pedals for us with the RS turbo. ordered my matte finish yesterday.

hey is there a model/year difference in our pedals?? i was working on my car today and since i'm gonna order some of these pedals soon i was taking a look at the stock pedals. my accelerator pedal is NOT like the brake/clutch. it feels like some thick plastic. definately not metal with a rubber cover. i know squid was saying his was like the brake/clutch pedals... might this not be important to know when ordering pedals?

after looking at squid's pics my accelerator pedals even looks different... like the shape of the upper part of the arm an stuff.. idk. anyone else take a look at theirs?

My gas pedal cover was a hard plastic, not a soft rubber; but it was s cover over a steal peddal. It had sevral tabs on the back. I ended up having to bake it in order to get it off.

Either way the plastic isn't thick enough to hold screws. That's what I tired at first, but the screws ended up sepearting the plastic cover from the pedal.

weird.. my whole pedals is hard plastic. like the arm and everything. there's no cover - definately one piece. anybdoy else? might be good to know if it's a model/year kinda thing...

I'm looking for some pedals that have some better grip than the stock ones. Some of my shoes as soon as there is a little water on the ground love to slip off the clutch while I'm trying to shift...not exactly the most fun thing. I was looking to get some pedals that for one look better than the stock ones, but also ones that have some better grip. I was looking at the momo corse grand prix pedals:

but I'm not sure if these will be a pain to put on and if they will even stay in place right. How are these autovation pedals compared with the other aftermaket pedals available?

I don't know how they compare to other aftermarket pedals. But I'd say the Autovation pedals aren't any more slipery that stock. The brake and clutch seem to have enough bite due to the michined lips. I was expecting my shoes to slip off, especially when wet, but I didn't notice and significant diffrence. It's been raining alot up here in RI lately and evrything has been fine.

Even though I polishe the gas pedal it still works fine.

If you want better grip you may be better off with something that has soft rubber on it. But the Autovation pedals aren't slippery.

how often d'you see that? none of that universal stuff. i ordered mine last week. still waiting for the group buy to finish i think.

squid, have you tried toe-heeling with those pedals yet? it's so hard to toe-heel with the stock ones i've been considering buying something like what you have to make life easier.

The heel and toe works a little better, but not a significant improvement than before thanks to the ledge on the gas pedal, but it sticks out less than an inch, maybe half an inch. But I've got small feet so it's still a reach for me.

lol dammit i got my pedals in the mail today but i got a dead pedal for a 6g celica along w/ my rst gas/clutch/brake pedals... :wary
they're really nice though. just gotta get in contact with them now... can't wait to install 'em!

k guys just to update, the guys at autovation were EXTREMELY helpful in fixing the mixup with my dead pedal. i didn't even need to call them. i sent them an e-mail on friday and got several replies and had a replacement pedal shipped out on monday (free of charge). they just asked that i return the celica dead pedal i was given by mistake and said they will cover the shipping charges. autovation gets an A+ for great fast customer service. oh and their pedals kick ass too!

so i went to install my pedals today after getting the correct dead pedal in the mail. drilling holes for the brake/clutch is a major PITA. the easiest way i found to do it was to do the bottom screw first. drill that one 3/16" as instructed. for the top two i just made them bigger than they're supposed to be. (i think i went up to around 9/32"). that way you just put on the bottom bolt/screw and then you're free to adjust the pedal so it sits nice an straight. drilling holes is hard enough. otherwise it's nearly impossibly to get the holes exactly where you want them. the pedals sit nice and tight even with only the bottom screw on.

as far as my gas pedal i need to go find more screws. i have the opposite problem from squid. my gas pedal is ALL plastic (including the arm). there is NO steel backing. autovation tried to correct the problem squid had by sending out screws/nuts like the ones on the brake/clutch instead of the self-tapping screw (like the ones for the dead pedal) that were originally included. because my entire pedal is all plastic the screws are nowhere near long enough to allow the bolt to be attached to the back. i NEED more self tappig screw like the ones on the dead pedal. guess i'm going to the hardware store tomorrow :P

squid if you're reading this, wanna send me your screws? haha you can have my extra brake/clutch ones that were supposed to be for the gas... dammit why're there two different types of gas pedals for our cars...

That's really odd that your pedal is all plastic. I would tink it would brake. But though it is all plastic can't you just attach it the same way. Drill all the way through the gas pedal and use the nut and bolt to attach it just like you did the clutch and brake pedals?

nope. because it's all plastic, the pedal is THICK. much thicker than the brake/clutch pedal. there's a bunch've re-enforcement ridges an stuff along the back too so it's not flat. that would make it very difficult to attach the nut and you would need a much longer bolt (probably about half the length). no worries though - i just went down and picked up some extra self-tapping machine screws. if anyone needs to know they are 8 x 1/2" flat top screws. install was easy for the gas. just like the dead pedal. haha i'm actually quite glad i don't have a steel pedal like you squid. that woulda been another PITA of drilling. maybe autovation should include enough screws/bolts to account for either type of gas pedal. it wasn't that hard to find the screws but i imagine finding the nuts an bolts would be kinda a pain.

so anyone care to check their pedal so we can determine if it's a year/model difference?

i'm a 95 RS with an all plastic gas pedal.
