46218, running wires into hatch? Posted by MCubed45, Apr-29-03 05:23 AM
any tips on running wires into the hatch? looks like i hafta go through that little boot thing... my headliner's out so while everyting's apart i'm gonna run a pair of wires off the domelight into the hatch. eventually i'm gonna mount an neon or something there to light up the back seat. how hard is it to get a pair of wires in there? i still gotta take off the trim from the hatch an stuff... is it tight w/ the 3rd brake light/defroster wires already in there? just wonderin. thanks!

i am wingless... used to have the brakelight mounted there but the previous owner took it off for some reason. the reason i'm running wires into the hatch is that i am planning on mounting the neon on the hatch at the very top where it meets the back of the headliner. it gives adequate lighting to the back seat while being fairly out of sight. the black strip on the rear glass prevent it from being seen frmo the outside and the fact it's mounted up near the glass prevents it from being seen in the front through the rear view mirror.
*edit* ok i now i think i know why you guys misunderstood me. i'm not mounting this on the rear DECK. i already have one there for the trunk. this is up in the actual trunk lid at the top of the glass where it meets the trim piece. if you look at the rear window from the outside, the neon is going underneath the black strip at the top. it is being mounted to the adjoing trim piece on the inside of the car. the only way to get wires there is through that rubber boot.

ok do as i said run in under the rug and then up the int and then into the back and up.... you shouldn't be able to see any wires if you do it this way...

dude, the wires are coming off the DOMELIGHT. that makes absoultely no sense. the wires are already originating above the headliner so i'm just running them along the roof to where that boot connects the hatch to the body of the car. there's already no way these wires are visible once the headliner and tri pieces are back in. i'm gonna have the neon function the same way the domelight does but for the back seat. it's gonna be wired in parallel to the switch. the wires need to go through that boot to be in the hatch itself. i just wanted to know if anyone had run wires into the hatch through that little boot thing (much like the ones on the doors). the ones on the doors are a PITA so i was just looking for info. i'm just asking if anyone's done this before. i'm not asking for a different idea. thanks anyways though :P

ok just if anyone wants to know, i managed to run the wires into the hatch. they are a major PITA!! it's worse than the doors b/c the boot is a lot smaller and harder to get to. it makes it easier if you unplug the defroster/brake wires from the harness inside the car. then you can get more slack on the boot and pull it out from being wedged between the hatch and the car body. other than that rubber boot the rest was straight forward. once i pick out what size neon i want it's going to be tapped into the center switch on the domelight. you kinda gotta have your headliner if you're runnin the wires to the domlight though. i jsut did it while i was redoing my headliner.
