44310, 99 Eclipse Body Mod Question Posted by BaseJaxx, Apr-05-03 06:01 AM
Ok, here it goes. I have a 1999 mitsu Eclipse. I have never really cared for the spyders because i dont like how they looked with the top up. I do however like how the Supras look with the T-top they have. I am thinking about taking my car my friends dads shop and choping it like the t-top for the supra. The cut would line up with the window so when its off it would match the lines. When its on it would look more or less like your standard hard top eclipse. What do you guys think? Either post or email me at Neonblacksun@hotmail.com Thanks guys
Any suggestions are welcome

I think it would look nice..
Are you going for a T-top.. or Targa Top?
I like how the Targa Top looks like, but it needs alot of structural support, and it still twists the chassis..
I like the T-top.. it looks nice.. but I wouldn't do it, because I have a sunroof :thumbsup

Targa top, I was wondering if there would be any structural problems. Would that be when i get really hard into the gas or just normaly? The other big issue is what it will look like with the back seat. I am also thinking about taking em out.

Ditch the back seats, all the cool kids do it :thumbsup. As for chopping the top, why not just go with a custom shaped sunroof or sumthin??? Or a permanent Three-diamond design in glass on your roof. Thats prolly the route i will eventually take, mostly so i can avoid all the support issues.

I know what your sayin bra' but i like convertables, but i hat how they look with the top up so i am trying to find a solution. The supra just gave me an idea on what to do, the support issues dont worry me so much as the chassis, Whats up with that?

if you do this and don't put in extra support, you'll be driving sideways b/c your chassis is bending and flexing:nono later

Ok, its me the BassJaxx but my computer is being difficult. Anyway, why would it cause stress on the chassis? I mean the spyder has no top and there arent any probs with its chassis? Please explain i am not understanding this. Also is it possible to strengthen the chassis enough so it wont cause any problems? If so how? Are there any other problems associated with this particular mod? How do I prevent them?
Thanks

I bet thats why he put that roll cage in it... most likley I think this is a kick ass mod. I would def. like to try something like this if I keep my car.

The spyders weigh more then a hard top because of all the reinforcement and extra weight from parts n whatnot. Flex, I believe, would be caused by torque. If you notice, torque steer pulls your car to one way, that is because of the flex of the chassis. Now with the middle of your roof taken out, or even being cut out, you are taking a big chunk out of the total structure. It, being in the middle of the car, would more hten likely hold the most stress out of any place on your vehicle. If you do it, don't plan on going fast, and definately get EVERY suspension stiffening product there is....ie strut bars, tie bars, 5th bar, roll cage, etc.
