43299, changing rims....is there anything that i could possibly fuck up? Posted by eclipse_gs_1512, Mar-23-03 07:15 AM
sorry if this is a really stupid question that i should probably know the answer to....but this is my first time changing my rims on my own.
ok, i'm in the middle of changing my rims right now and i'm just wondering if there is anything i can screw up. it seems pretty straight forward....but that's where i screw things up. i'm putting 92 ft/lbs of torque on the lugs....is that good or should i take it up to the max(101 ft/lbs)? tia!!

not a stupid question at all. but it is pretty straight forward. i think the torque will be enough, just make sure you get the lugs on straight because noone wants a stripped stud. bolt them on diagonally, for example, do 1 bolt, then the one that is diagonally across next. have fun! later chris

43310, Everything was going way too smoothly!!!!! Posted by eclipse_gs_1512, Mar-23-03 08:07 AM
well, i've got three of my rims on.....but there is one lug on my last stocker that just doesn't want to come off. so my dad says....maybe if you hit the wrench with a sledge hammer it will knock it loose. i was kinda worried about that but i figured he knew what he was doing. so i let him have a crack at it while i was holding the wrench.....he hits the wrench and bounces the sledge hammer into my rear quarter panel taking the paint completely off.:( never let sledge hammers near your car!!!! i shoulda known better. looks like i'm gonna buy a body kit after all and just have the body shop paint rear quarter panels when they do the kit.

yeah, one other thing... DONT let anyone else tighten them but you after you learn. I have seen wheels fall off of cars before. If they arn't tight enough you will hear a clunking noise when you move or stop. Make sure you have the car on stands not only a jack also :)

i dont even bother using torque wrench on the wheels. I just tighthen them as much as i can by hand. before I used to use a long as pipe (like 5 feet) and hook it onto the wrench and like jumped on the end of it. I had to be placing like 200ft or more on that bitch. Now i just tigthen them with the wrench and thats all.
