42731, molding a roof scoop Posted by farmdogg55, Mar-16-03 10:42 AM
i have a fiberglass roof scoop that is going to be molded on my car at the end of april. how much do you think this will cost? i would just like some ballpark figures if anyone knows so i can decide if the bodyshop is charging a decent price. i need to start looking for a bodyshop soon so i can make an appointment. i will be getting the roof painted red too, so add that in the price please. thanks in advance to anyone that can help!

this is just a guess, but... i would assume probably about 4 hours of actual work (not counting the time the fiberglass takes to dry) so about 200-250 assuming how much they charger per hours. Its not hard but just time consuming. that is just for it to be molded, more for paint. tack on another 300 for the roof painted since most of it will be preped already.

Im gana piss you off, but the roof scoop will crack off after a few months. Im sure you have seen niclip"s (spelt wrong) roof scoop and he has had it redone 2 times. Go and have one welded on and it will last forever

crack from? the air? i thought that since it isnt a functional roof scoop, then the hole doesnt have to be open that far so not much wind would get under it. maybe i will just close off the hole and put some mesh there, but that wouldnt look as good. would that stop it from cracking?

Anything sticking up off your roof is gonna have a bunch of pressure put on it. With the direction the air is flowing over your car, and the velocity at which it is traveling, will rip anything off over time. Unless, that is, you are having something more permanent done, like welding or something of the sort. You could get a metel scoop made, and weld that on, then mold the edges, and it would have the same look, but prolly stand up to the pressure mo betta. Just my .02 n whatnot :thumbsup.

well i can give u some advice since i have one on my car. I had it put on last march. i bought a fiberglass one and it was a piece o' shit!.. i could see right thru it. So i spent a lot of money to have it done. The shop had to reinforce the scoop itself (used what they use on porches).. then molded it to the roof with fiberglass. Now i have had it on over a year (mind u i live in Colorado where the weather conditions change all the time) and have gone over 90mph with it and have not had a single problem!.. what happens is the scoop will fill with air and then cause almost a force field so it acts as tho it was solid. Like a convertable does. I have not had one chip, crack, etc at all. Maybe its cause it was done right. It took the shop 12 hrs to do..becuase they had to almost rebuild the whole scoop, and apply it. They said it was such a pain they would never do it again.. but in anycase.. i have some pix of it in the process if your interested in seeing.. I know several people have had bad luck, but i believe its all in the material and application=).. just thought i'd share my experience.

yup, but with the cost of 12 shop hours x $50 per hr labor =$2600? just get the metal one imo and weld and then gring down the welds and ur done!

not to start a fight or anything, but why spend that much money or any real money on a non-functional scoop? if you want it to be good and not fall apart its gonna cost a lot and a lot of people are just gonna think you are trying to be "bad ass" with a scoop that does nothing. A lot like the front of a mustang which has that plastic grill over the slant in the hood that doens't do crap. I think they look okay but i don't know why youd wanna spend the money? just curious

42959, RE: molding a roof scoop Posted by solareclipsegurl, Mar-19-03 02:16 AM
i personally did it cause i liked the way it looked, not to be cool, or show-off, but i just cause i liked it and had the cash to spend at the time. because at that time i wasnt into engine mods so it didnt matter. Hey no one says why did u spend 2600 on a turbo when yr engine is stock..
but like was stated ..dont wanna start a fight.. but its true. it did cost bout 2600. for the scoop to be done right, but thats what i was into and still am, and since i was gonna do it, I had it done right. I have never thought of the metel idea, but i dont see at all why it wont work=), if u plan to glass the metel scoop on, then there might be probs, cause if its not done right it could still come off the roof itself, instead of the scoop itself cracking.
but hey, its not functional, and i dont care. I like it as many others do as well, so instead of critisizing someone for doing it, why not just help them=).. didnt mean to start anything, I just am trying to help=)

haha, i was waiting for someone to bring up the non-functional thing. personally i am only doing it because i love the way it looks, simple as that. i am more into exterior mods. i already had to replace the engine once, so i am just happy the thing runs! maybe later on down the road i will start modding the engine, but not now. i dont care if i am slow, i will look good while you are passing me...i have no problem with that.

I think that the whole roof scoop thing it's just ridiculus , it looks like crap, and it's way to expensive to get it right that's classic on the fast and furious wannabe's(sorry Lisa I think tour car looks hot though)so if I was you I'll just get some money for the cf scoop that you have and spend your money in something else .
Lisa why don't you post a picture of you in your car , im curious.;)

I don't think he asked what anyone thought of a roof scope so if you aren't going to help then don't post just to give him shit for it. It's no different then a putting a body kit on a car... it's his car it's what he wants to do. Telling him that it might crack or what could go wrong is one thing but telling him that you think it's ugly, pointless or a waste of money isn't needed.
Now that I got that out: I would talk to the shop that is going to do it. Shop around a little. See if they have done anything like it before and ask to see pictures. I don't know if you could get a hold of Nick but I saw he was selling his car so if you check in the sale section a few pages back I'm sure you could find his post and an email addy for him.. he can help you out. Whoever has one above can you post some more pics please? TIA.

thanks man, yeah i knew i would get some of those responses, its alright...i'm used to them. i'm not going to ask Nick because on his website it says not to ask him about it, so i will respect his wishes. Lisa did help me out though and i thank her for that. if anyone else has any advice or experience i would appreciate it. the hard thing is that not many people have one, so its hard to find people that can help. thats why Nick is probably sick of all the questions, i understand that. this will be done, i just have to figure out which route to take. and i will definetly try to find a shop that has experience at least in body kits...hopefully roof scoops too.

In response to josemex: i have a pic of my car posted. Its the yellow one in my sig.
RSClipse: Thanx for making that statement about not giving him shit=)..
Remember guys, there are several people here who just want to mod the outside (looks), and since this is the Interior/ Exterior forum, why give anyone shit bout having a roof scoop. If some people dont like it, thats kewl.. heck, everyone is entitled to their own opinion of what they like and dont like, just like they have the right to choose where or what they want to spend their money on=). wether it be performance or looks.
As far as the fast and furious comment, well we all know that will always come up on threads like these.. as far as i go, i wanted a sunroof, but since it was unsafe to cut into my existing roof, i decided to do the scoop, because i liked the way it looked, and theres nothing wrong with that=)
I have PM'd farmdogg with pix of the scoop as it was in its stages. I would be more than happy to post them for others, if there are those who r truely interested.
