I work at a hardware store and have access to anything including our full shop. I bought a bunch of fiberglass mat and resin etc. and now can't decide what to make. What cool things have you done, either custom sub enclosures, fiberglass stuff, or anything else. Also how can i go about making one of those rsdsm front lip things for my 98, i just can't afford 200 bucks.

Well, some options: make a chin or more advanced full bumper. You have a "mold" per say to make a front of rear bumper, but this would take some knowledge of glass and time. The chin would be very do-able though. Gauge holders is another fairly easy to do project. Though mine's made of plastic, a gauge holder where the center vents go would be pie. If you have a TON of time on your hands, then you can make your own seat. We are doing this on my school's racecar to save weight. It's do-able but very time consuming. I would definately warn you to wear long sleeves and even some vasoline on your arms when sanding it down, it itches like you wouldn't believe!

Yeah I am currently fiberglassing my PVC CAI, my speaker pods for the doors and my amp rack. Its taking forever!! I just hope it comes out how I think its going to. You could also do any kind of interior panel. I was seriously condsidering redoing the rear panels on either side of the rear seat so that I could have an 8" sub enclosure on either side. Thought that would look pretty badass!!

hahah, when i did my most recent set of kickpanels i did all the work with no gloves and no shirt on. washing resin off of your hands is a bitch, they looked like cacti (sp?) after i was done, and i was itching like crazy.


you mentioned creqating your own lip, so i thoguht id give you some advise on this.....its not going to be easy.

youll need to remove the bumper, mask it completely, set up some kind of framework for the lip itself (possibly a wood mockup?) and then lay down the fiberglass over it. then youll need to sand, check the fitament , probably lay down some more 'glass, sand some more, etc. etc.... mounting it should not bee to hard, you can probably use some kind of L-brackets to attach the two together. if i were you, i would not attempt this as my first project. its a very free form and large piece, and thats hard to pull off. anything where you can "build up" on a factory piece is much eiser, for example putting the 8" subs in the rear side panels (as mentioned above). you have the "form" there already, you simply need to add a framwork on top of it and stretch material over it and apply the resin to get your basic shape.

You're going to wanna get more than mat and resin if you want to make things look nice. Say you want to make something easy and mostly flat (curved and odd shaped take more, like parting lines etc.) like the side panel on our consoles.
What you need to do first is take the panel and make it smooth this will be used as your "plug" or male mold. It would be best to get a spare one. Take the panel and either sand it smooth with fine grit paper, or you can make a smooth layer of fiberglass filler and then sand it smooth.
After you get it all smooth, you'll need some release wax, and PVA (poly-vinyl alcohol), these help the mold from sticking to the plug. Put 3 coats of wax on the panel buffing each one off like you do your car. After the last coat of wax dries, spray on 2 coats of PVA. After the PVA dries, you can start on your female mold.
The best way to go is to spray the panel with 1 or 2 thin coats of tooling gel coat, this will make the inside of the female mold smooth and shiny. After the gel dries to the touch you can start with the fiberglass. I usually use 5-6 layers for my molds so they last. Put a layer of resin then a layer of mat and so on, you can trim the extra off with a utility knfe. After you have the female mold done and dry ( i sually wait a day or two), you should be able to seperate it from the plug. The inside of the female mold should be shiny and flawless seeing this is what the final piece will be based on.
Now that the mold is done, you can start on the actually fiberglass panel. Use the release wax and PVA as before inside the female mold so your final piece will come out easily. After the PVA dries, it's the same process again, tooling gel coat, resin mat. Depending on how thick you want it depends on how many layers you do. Trim the excess off while it's wet, it'll be alot easier than when it's dry. Now that you have all your layers trimmed and let it dry for a day or 2, you can release your final piece from the mold. As long as your mold was flawless, the final panel should be too. Sand the edges smooth, primer and your ready to go. I wish i had some pics to show you, but im not home, i'm on my g/f's computer. Next time i'm home i'll post some Just thought i'd help out so you can make some nice pieces. You can also use your female mold to make the piece out of carbon fiber. But the CF process is different. how can i make that rsdsm lip? like what should i use as a mold and also could i make sideskirts?

A good friend of mine rebuilds vintage mustangs, and on his personal car he's redoing the hood. I'm not sure on our cars, but I hink a fiberglass hood will save alot of weight, and is a helluva lot cheaper than carbon fiber. Its also not as ugly (sorry guys). He's pretty new to fiberglassing, and his stuff looks pretty nice. He said his hood was one of the easier thigns he did...

that would be cool, but i dont want to risk screwing mine up, how can i make a front lip, or side skirts, please anyone know? what should i use as molds etc. If you help me i'll send you free fiberglass mat and resin:thumbsup
