ok lets say I get a hid kit from ebay and one of the bulbs blows out in 3 years, can I go to lexus dealership and tell them I need a new one and if so how much, I'm wanna get the purple color but some auctions say 6000k is purple and other say 7000k is purple so I'm not sure.

do the ballasts have to match the bulb is it like 7000k ballast and 7000k blub and makes it 7000k

How much? Depends on the dealer. Will it work? Depends on the kit you buy.

~4500K is pure white. I believe Audi uses 6500K and they have a purplish tint. BMW uses somewhere around 5000K for what it's worth. Not sure what temp Lexus uses. As temp gets further away from white, the brightness decreases as well.

Ballasts work independently of bulb temp.

the higher the xxxxK is the the hotter and brighter the bulbs are. daylight is about 6500K and i think the silverstar bulbs are are 4000k and standard HID are 4100K

4100K puts out 3200 lumens

5400K puts out 2600 lumens.

It does not get brighter as the temp goes up.

I think this might only be for that ballast that that company makes. Each ballast is different.... Each company that makes hid's has there own system on how they rate it. most after market ones only come in 6000k - 8000k with there being the exception and having the 9000k. they are not matched up compared to the above chart. you have to look at there manufactor specs. white light only travels so far. a blue light will travel further, as well as the purple. do a more refined search on the company that makes the ballast... that is the key to your hid's. the bulb is made to fit the harness. it's all filled with the same gas.

The more blue the light is the more glare you will get in fog/rain/snow. The shorter wavelength of blue light make it easier to scatter.

squid won't the housing have a lot to do with that also. cause on the s4 and beemers they don't run into that problem from what i see. but maybe i'm wrong.....

I’m not sure what problem you are referring to. From what I understand OEM HID lights are no hotter than 6000k and HID lights that claim higher than 6000k tint the bulb to give it a more blue color (OEM HID bulbs are clear)

You are right that the housing does affect the color. From http://faq.auto.light.tripod.com/headlamp-faq.htm :

Yellow/orange sector. In a sector straight down from arc of the bulb, yellow/orange is highly visible. The direction will not change, even if bulb is rotated. In an OEM HID headlight, usage of this light sector is either totally blocked off, toned down and/or spread evenly into the rest of the beam so that headlamp output will only have very minor or non yellow hotspots. How much this sector straight down from arc is utilized will directly affect the color that headlight emits.

The ends of the arc have almost double the intensity and bluest color. Which means that optical engineers can make headlamp output bluer (or more yellow) than the bulb output color is, without using color filters (like they do in photography). For HID retrofitting in halogen headlamps, this is a feature that cannot be utilized. Its pretty obvious that a chromed reflector cannot be reshaped in any way. So a unlucky retrofitter CAN end up with color spectrum from brown to bright white - in different places of the beam.

i have real oem hid's fitted into my oem headlamps. was a bitch to fit them in but they are hot as hell i gotta get some pics up... there supppose to be out of a s4 or a merc. he didn't know but there were the brightest ones he had.... when i get to the garage i'll have to take some... the car is put up for the winter so i hardly visit it.. but i might have to make a special trip for pics...

lexus HIDs are 9006 (or whatever our bulbs are) cuz i have them but the bulbs from lexus are $300 and the ballasts are $3000! your best bet is to try to find replacement bulbs on ebay or something like i did. paid $75 for phillips bulbs. i have to get around to installing them soon (and fixing that short in one of my ballasts... it's sitting there inside my car not connected to anything)
