40935, Reverse lights. Posted by Apocalypse, Feb-18-03 05:23 AM
Yeah, I tried the search thingy, but nothing helpful came up. Anyway, my reverse lights dont work. The bulbs LOOK fine, but I havent replaced them (tonight). IF new bulbs doesnt work, where else do I look? Fuses pehapse? Which fuses? And, I heard a murmmur about something on the top of the transmission that might affect this? Thanks. -Beau

first off, get a test light, put your car in reverse (with the car turned to the ON position, but not started) and check if your even getting power back there. then id check the fuse. then id check the lil switch that actually turns on the reverse lights. those maybe wahts on top of the tranny.

ya it's kinda common for the sensor on the tranny to need replacin. i dunno if you're 5spd or not but i had to replace mine an it was pretty simple. it's a brass looking bolt on the tranny with a wire harness coming out the top. it's on the drivers side under the intake and near the ecu an stuff. easiest thing to do is to unplug the wire harness and just bridge the two metal prongs with a wire or something. if your lights come on when you do that, the sensor's busted. i got raped at satan ($70somethinish) but you should be able to find the part elsewhere for a lot less. i think it's a fairly universal part. k hope that helped. sry i don't have pics..

a little off topic but couldnt you bridge the sensor and just hook it up to a simple toggle switch?

I thought about the toggle idea also Malenko, but what if you forgot that it was on and drove around? Might be cool on the freeway if someone is tailgating though... BLAM reverse lights in your face. OK, I dug into it and here is what I found W/test light. I have power at the fuse box for the reverse lights. I do not have power at the lights themselves while in reverse. HOWEVER I did have power at the lights for like 20 seconds, just long enough for me to test both lights. Then I had none... fuse is fine. Had my friend get in the car and kind of "wiggle" the shifter around in reverse, nothing. Guess I will get the little sensor thing and see if that helps... Ive had some close calls in parking lots lately :-(

yup sounds like the sensor. mine was busted but i got it to work once or twice briefly. kinda irritating. oh an i was gonna do the whole switch thing too. actually i probably still am. but what i'm gonna do is run the switch in parallel with the sensor. and it's jsut gonna be a push button switch (only on when you hold in the button). this way the lights function as normal w/ the tranny but if you tap the button they'll flash. i'm gonna do this after i convert my reverse lights when i buy a new rear. i was thinking 'bout putting in some headlight bulbs in there instead too... hehe that'd be kinda cool. might actually make a big diff. if you've got really dark tint too.

to check if it's the sensor or not just take off the wire connector at the switch on top of the tranny, go in your house and dig threw that drawer of useless crap you have and find a paper clip, unbed the paper clip and jam each end into each hole of the connector, then walk around to the back of your car and see if they are on, if so the switch is bad, if not either you got a bad connection with your paper clip or you got a problem in the wiring somewhere.
