40649, 97-99 Side skirts Posted by Module Unknown, Feb-13-03 08:40 PM
Anyone here ever had these skirts installed on their RS? Just curious on what is involved or an idea of what it cost to have them installed at a body shop. The skirts have a bunch of plastic clips/pins sticking out the back of them. Is that all that really holds the skirts onto the car? Just drill holes and push them in?
I picked up a set of skirts and i'm just curious what I'm looking at as far as $$$ goes. Anyway, i need to find a place to have them put on now, but just wanted to get an idea what other people paid.
Oh and check this out. The reason I got these skirts is because they matched the color of my car so I figured I wouldn't have to deal with having them painted. Well, I spoke with the guy over the phone that sold them to me and he was well aware of the fact that I wanted to throw these on without painting. So what does he fu**ing do!? He ships them to me in a fu**ing garbage bag wrapped in duct tape so the shit won't fall out. Genius! Cause we all know that UPS is gentle with packages. So anyway, I get the bag... peices are poking out, scratched, scuffed, etc. At this point I just assume this guy is the dumbest mother******* on the planet. I cut open the bag to find the skirts duct taped to themselves!?!? So I try peeling it off as careful as possible, but no luck. The tape leaves behind silver patches and sticky residue. Omg! Not that it really mattered at that point anyway cuase I already needed to repaint them due to the terrific packaging job. I have pics too! Maybe i'll post them later. But if anyone could tell me what they went through to install their skirts, or how much it cost, I'd appreciate it.
TIA

many people have done this before. i went with aftermarket side and all. but here's some advice. to get the duct tape off, get a blow dryer and heat it up, then the tape will come off easy. and i'm guessing some water will help as well. later

thats what most of us have been using.. installation is simple... but the hardest part is getting the skirts to stick to the side of teh car, where the skirt meets the door... double sided tape, industrial strength velcro, etc... theyve all been tried.. so good esxperiences, some bad.. i got mine up there with both.. haha. works well, but i need to press them every now and then.
EDIT: well, that link WAS the right link.. but the archives are still down... basically, just get the plastic clips from the dealer (or if you have them, youre set), or get screws and washers... then drill holes up into the bottom of the car with a drill bit that is smaller than the width of the clipse (or washers). simple as that.

Mine isn't a 97-99 side skirts, but I just put some 95-96 skirts on last weekend. I love them! I painted it and installed for total of $120 or something. Base coat, clear coat, thinner..etc cost be about $100. the little plastic pins cost me about $20. If you got the right equipment, you should do it yourslef. I don't think mine are the best...but i'm pretty proud of it! Got some pics, check it out. It was my first time painting project. Never seen paint.LOL but I did. (its also a cheap and easy way to get "high") :P Here's what I did for puttin them on. I got some kind a clay or something...and sticked it against the car. I stretched it out pretty smooth and thin. Without the plastic pins I layed my skirts where i wanted them and pushed it agian the car. Here comes the hard part... after removing the skirts you'll see where the actual pins will go pasted on the clay or what not...I don't know about you guys..BUT it herts for me to scratch, dent, or DRILL holes on/in my car.. :rolleyes but with a nail and a hammer or anything...just put a little mark so you'll know where to drill...and just DRILL }( it...:-( When you put them on, try by puttin the big piece first then the little front tire section piece. then the door caps. Trust me, its a lot easier and you'll know why...!! For the sticky stuff, I got this sticker remover spray...I think I got it at autozone for $4. Works great, so CHECK IT OUT!! I dont know if can be a help like the other guys, but let me know if you got any problems!! BRUUOOUUOOUUOUUUMMMMMMNNMMMMNNNNMMMNNMMNNNNMMMMMM (my car with back fire:+ )

Thanks. I just wanted to get an idea of what was involved and what other people went through installing them. I'm going to look around for a body shop to paint and install them. I don't really feel comfortable drilling holes in my car. And as far as removing the sticky silver residue left behind by the tape, I really wasn't concerned about that anyways since I'm going to have to repaint these due to the lame packaging for shipping (they're all scratched up now). Still can't believe the guy sent them wrapped in nothing but a garbage bag with a label on it wrapped in duct tape. What's even cooler is that I emailed this guy and was basically like "wtf!?" and his reply was... "go f*** yourself" and a giant smily face. People suck. Well, except all you guys. :)

Nah, it was off dsmtrader. I can put his name up on goodguybadguy.org which i'll probably do, but other than that there isn't a whole lot I can do.
It's not all bad though. On the bright side I do have some skirts for my car. Now it won't look so nekkid. I just have to paint em now. Oh well. I'm just pissed that once he got my money it seemed like he just didn't give a f*** anymore. I mean seriously, shipping them in a bag... x(
At least I got the parts. I'll get over it.
