hi.. guys, I'm in the process of fixing the front bumper.. it had several cracks.. and one 2" hole.., i filled everything up with fiber glass, bondo, and sanded it to be really smooth and everything.... now my question is... I see aloooooot of small cracks on the paint..... its like spider web... should i bother to wet sand it?? or just paint on top of it??

if u wanna do it the right way, youll have 2 sand the whole bumper down and primer it,,painting over paint that is flakin is just gonna continue to flake off,,

Make sure you get a flex paint. Regular paint will spider if pushed again. The flex paint will give with the bumper as it moves.

You also need to use a good wax and grease remover befor you paint. Prob most of those spiderwebs are from grease on the bumper lifting the paint.

no, bondo tends to crack fairly easily on a fiberglas bumper, imagine the longevity of bondo on a urethane bumper. and fiberglas (i have been told correctly i assume) will not bond to urethane for the same reasons. urethane is like a bendable plastic and fiberglas is a stiff mesh, so when the urethane bends and the fiberglas doesnt, youre left with another crack. at any rate, even if fiberglas and bondo DID hold on a urethane bumper, the paint would not

true that cyan.. but there are a few points to take in consideration... the reason, if, the paint is not sticking to fiberglass bumpers... is cuz..

1: fiberglass resin either.. epoxy or polyester
2: Mold release agent .. which shouldn't be silicone based.

the paint would stick to bondo and fiberglass.. if done right..

there are ways of using fiberglass.. to make it stick to the bumper and make it flexible enough.. but even then it's britle and it'll crack..

other than that the only way to fix a polyurethane bumpers is.. to cut a small piece out of a bumper.. and try to melt it.. to find out.. if it is a thermoset or a thermoplastic.. if it doesn't burn out.. but melts down.. then you can patch the bumper from inside.. with another (big enough but thin layer) piece of polyurethane.. and use heat gun to melt it.. and bond it with the bumper... and it'll be all flexible and stuff...

me being too poor.. :P.. is going the cheap way here... plus i'm going to be designing/making fiberglass bumpers for our cars as soon as i move to a place with garage.. (that'd be in summer sometime)... not toooooooo wild ones... just a bit different... :P

You got it right...best way to fix a bumper in urethane is to "weld" another plastic piece in from the backside with a .....
something that I dunno the american word for*sorry*..looks like a screwdriver but the top is getting hot as hell..then you melt the pieces together and then ontop of that use a flexible filling....Its been done a thouseand times and it works:-))

All kinds of bodywork are not to hard to fix yourself if ya truy and have time to spare....I have not yet left anything in my entire carcareer*S* to any shop...done everythiing myself and its possible....just think about what ya do and learn before you start..then its no problem....
