guys i need some detailed instructions on how to remove the front bumper on my '95, and also on how to remove the headlight assemblies.

Eclipse/Talon 1995-1999 Front bumper removal / Aftermarket front installation

-Remove the 10mm bolts on the bottom of the factory bumper. (6 total)


-Remove the plastic screws from the front of each inner fenderwell. turn the wheels to the opposite side to get them out. i chose not to reuse them so i used a pair of pliers to pull them out and threw them away, they just make it harder to bolt and unbolt the sides of the bumper or remove the bumper sidemarkers.


-Fold the inner fenderwell plastic back and go behind it to remove the 2 screws/bolts that hold the bumper to the fender.


-Unbolt the five 10mm bolts on top of the bumper and the 10mm bolt on top of each headlight.



-Now you must remove the headlight to get to the last two bolts. On the backside outer edge of each headlight are two more 10mm bolts holding the light to the frame. these are hard to get to without an assortment of wrenches and sockets, but you may find it easier than i did. The final headlight bolt is the hardest to get to. If you look closely from behind the lights, they are at the very bottom of the headlight. They can also be seen if you lay down in front of the car and look up through the front air dam hole. Just get a reallly long socket wrench extension and slide it through in between the gap of the bottom of the headlight and the bumper...easy. Now you can reach the last two on each top side of the bumper there on the 30mph bumper crash zone crossmember.


-The front bumper should now slide off. You can trash the two black metal brackets that held the sides of the bumper to the fenders, they are useless.




-Also while you are here, you may want to remove the black plastic panel that is mounted in front of the radiator behind the rebar. it is not heavy but it blocks airflow to the radiator. I never needed it out of my way until i installed my hoodpins which require access to the radiator area behind this panel. to remove it you need to first remove the five 10mm bolts that hold the bumper mounting bracket onto the radiator support. four of them are facing you on top and the fifth is on the bottom center.


-Use needlenose pliers and pull the plastic screws (6, i think) out of the frame holding the plastic panel in.


-You are finished with removal now. Reinstall the headlights first using the top bolt and one or two of the side bolts to secure it. BE SURE to reconnect the factory wiring harness and turn signals before installing the lights. It is a pain to get the entire thing back together and then take it apart again to plug one of these in.


-When buying another bumper be sure to mount it first with it unpainted to insure that it fits. line it up and drill all the holes in the top and side bumper mounting points. the bottom of aftermarket kits will not bolt to the lower bumper bracket so dont bother. and whatever you do, DO NOT bolt in the two bolts that you removed from under the headlights. Trust me, the tiny tabs that bolt to the car will be the first part of a fiberglass kit to break if you hit something. and everytime you need to remove the bumper, if those bolts are attached you will have to first remove the headlights to get the bumper off. You would be surprised at how many times you actually need to remove the front bumper. I have done it at least 30 times for things like mounting hoodpins, fog lights, or grilles in the bumper. I use the 5 bolts up top and a plastic zip tie on each side to mount my bumper. just insert the zip tie through the hole in the bumper and the hole in the fender and pull them. Do not insert bolts or screws in the fenderwell mounting points either. First of all, you will have to remove them to change bumper lenses or bulbs and also to get access to the zip ties. Second, if one of them was to come out while driving it may get lodged in your tire as it hits the ground.


-This should be all you need and more to remove the front bumper and reinstall a new one.

To remove the front bumper, there is going to be 5 10mm bolts right under the hood on the middle of the bumper that you need to take off. Pop out your sidemarker lights and there will be 1 10mm bolt right in the middle up top on each side. Pull those black plastic screw type things off the black shield thing on your inner fender well and there will be 1 10mm bolt on each side that connects the very corner of your bumper to the fender. It's been so long since I've done this but there may be some little black plastic things on the middle of your bumper holding it to the bumper support on the black part of your bumper in the middle. Now you should be able to just pull the bumper down and it will be off. As far as the headlights go, there will be one bolt on the very top. One on the bottom of the assembly and 2 on the side closest to where the turn signal bulb is. Then unplug the headlight wiring harness on the bottom and take the turn signal bulb out and the headlight assembly should come out easily. I hope that was detailed enough for you.

thanks for the responses. i am going to do a little modifying to the bumper, and i am going to paint it b/c the person that had it b4 me kinda chipped a few pieces of paint off of it.

do you have to remove the headlights? if not i dont think that i will, but i thought that i read somewhere that you would have to take them off to take the bumper off.

naww, no need too, you just have to pop the plastic screws underneath the headlights, go under the bumper/look where the headlights and bumper meet, feel for them if you need to but i just popped them out with a screw driver(2 under each headlight). IMO its harder to remove the headlights before you remove the bumper, so you could do it either way
