Why does our shift knob sit so high? What can you do to make it sit lower than what it is? Will a short shifter kit make a big difference? Thanks guys!

You can cut the shifter itself and weld it back together. There are a few members of the board who offer this service. There is also the Symborski shift kit, which is found at www.machv.com, it is basially metal bushings that replace your stock rubber bushings. This gives you a better feel of the gears and less slop in shifting. There are also multiple short shifters that you can buy, but from what i hear, the best thing to do is to get it cut. I am sure you could go to a local machine ship and get it done for like $20.

You can always buy a B&M for whatever they go for now, $175?? I got it with the Symbo kit, def sits shorter. But if you put an aftermarket knob, I did twice, it will be high again, unless it's a really short knob. I went back to stock after 5 months, I was all out of it. It felt heavy compared to the one I had, but I think for driving I'll, keeping the stock one.

I took my shifter apart and had it cut 1 3/4" off and rewelded at a local muffler shop - The guy liked my car a lot and did it for Free. (Only took him about 10 minutes to complete the job)

mine used to do that to, in fact driving an eclipse with a stock shifter is like being in hell now, lol. Mine has been shortened by 2" and was done by Hurricane GS, but I dont know if I would give him any of your money right now.

That's a nice shift knob, just doesn't go with my look. Anyone know of a carbon fiber knob that would screw right in like stock, cause I hate the 3 allen wrench screws for knobs.

I have looked at the Momo, Sparco, B&M, and other cheap ones...

Yeah it does. I have it and would recommend it. But if you got the $175+ for the shifter a decent knob shouldn't be a problem unless you want a name brand fancy one that cost close to $100, which to me is pointless and I won't do it. What do these companies think?...

i have a symborski shift kit that i haven't put in yet..and a custom cut 2" cut short shifter..that i haven't put in yet..i also have the greddy shift knob that fits right over the stock hole..it's great..feels great..it's chrome and it doesn't have smear marks or anything on it..very smooth..fun to shift with..i'm just too lazy to put in my short shifter and my symborski shift kit :) later

I had the B&M short shifter set on 50% reduction and I kept the stock knob for the most part, the nice Momo race one I had stuck up a little bit and it always got loose eventually because of those stupid allen wrench screws. I like the stock shift knob though and the shifter feels wonderful, very clean and crisp, plus I bought the polyurethane mounts, MUCH better than the Symborski and cheaper too, the Symborski is too harsh for me, metal on metal is not a good thing in the shifter assembly IMO.

I had an apex short shifter and it sucked ass. Then I had hurricane gs shorten a stock shifter 2 inches and it's bad ass. Plus I have a greddy shift knob. Cant ask for it to be better than it is right now.

My friends brother works at Midas Mufflers, I know he does custom exhaust so he must weld too... anyway if I take my car there, center console removed, does he just cut the "pole" part of the shifter (the part the boot covers) and remove two inches from it and then weld the rest of the pole on??? Thats it right?

all you need is a hack saw or steel cutoff saw, and a wire welder (works best) and they will have those at the muffler shop. i made mine even shorter by cutting away some of the shifter there where the actual shank attatches to the pivot point. i took about 1 inch or so out there so mines 3 inches shorter. oh, and DO NOT grid the weld down. i did that on my first shifter, ground the weld down too much and broke it in a race.
