3478, Changing the center console
Posted by DSMNT96, Apr-25-01 10:50 AM
I have a 96 RS and my center console doesnt have a storage compartment with a latch and cover. Instead it has an extra cup holder. :( Well, I just want to know if there is anyway I could switch that with one that has the extra compartment. If anyone has done it, how hard was it to install? From what I can see, it seems to be a fairly simple job, but I could be wrong. Any info will be appreciated.

Look around the bottom edge of the back of the cosole(the part with the extra cupholder) You can see little indentations, just stick a screw driver in and lift up. After going around the whole thing in will pop out. Then you can just pop the whole new unit in. The dealer will probably charge you like $80 for the rear console section of a GS. I got mine from a junkyard for $30. I ended up putting the RS one back in, because it's lower, and it's better for me to rest my arm on when I'm holding the shift. I made a pad that goes on the front of it where my arm rests.

I did it in mine, its easy you just have to buy the pieces from the dealer or get them at a junkyard.....you need the lid and the console base as well. The one in the RS does not have the holes for the lid arms ... install is just basically take the console base off, put the lid on, screw it on the bottom and put the new base on after that...
looks much better with the lid on

Yeah you can change the center console even if you have a manual and the console is auto. I just did it right now from a console I found at a junkyard. Fit perfectly. It has a shift lock sticker on it right now goofy... :P

Thanks guys, Im gonna have to buy the console from the dealer cause the junkyards around here dont have junked eclipses and talons. Just old American and Japanese cars. Thanks again. :)
