34120, Do you have to clearcoat all CF hoods after install?
Posted by xEclipsE RaceRx, Nov-12-02 07:56 AM
Im about to buy a R1 carbon fiber hood, (anyone heard anything on them?) and the place that is selling them says that they the hood (as long as every other cf hood) should be buffed of clear coated. My question is on the Vis hoods or fiber images...do you have to clear coat those after install? How much is it to clear cloat a cf hood or can I do it myself?

every cf hood that ive seen has clearcoat already on it, ive never seen a hood with just raw fiber/resin, i might wash it to get rid of prints youll put on it, but polishing the 1st day seems like overkill.

He is correct. Clear coat is already on it, nothing to finish. Just buff it out a little to shine it up.

Actually most cf hoods come with a clear gel coat that is not the same as a painted clear coat. Most of them look smooth, but aren't perfect, and for the best look, you should wet sand all that off and have a professional spray real clear coat on it. However, the good quality hoods look good enough without having to redo the clear. It just depends on if you are a perfectionist or not...

yeah...he's got it right, ive never heard of a cf hood without a gel coat. Unless your getting a super cheap price, id get a fiber images hood if i were you.

That's cool. I gotta go get some from the shop, it'll be in there for another 2 weeks, but I don't see why I can't take some there for you. I'll stop by tomorrow and shoot some, gimme a day or two.

the invader owns with my front. I was talking to John at prostreet, and he told me that most hoods come with a finish like a clear coat, but if you want the shine and finish to last, have a UV clear coat done. He said without that, some hoods will start to turn yellowish. I assume he meant the clear coat fades yellowish. It doesn't have to be done right off the bat, but for durability, you probably wanna get a UV clear coat applied.
