33992, New idea...Need opinions
Posted by Layton141, Nov-10-02 10:51 AM
This is a little hard to explain but here it goes: I have a full blitz kit on my car. You know how everyone has mesh grills. I was wanting something different. You can buy aftermarket grills for some trucks. I am talking about the kinds that have like small parallel horizontal fins. I was thinking about taking one of those and having it rewelded, cut , and modified to fit in the front opening of the blitz kit. Tell me how you think that would look. Also, Does anyone know what trucks take these grills? Grill would have to be large enough to fit the opening. Follow this link to get a better idea of what I mean

Thanks,
Lee

yea man, looks pretty sweet. depending on what the grill tubing is like, you might be able to put screws or bolts through the sides of your fiberglass and into the ends of the tubing hopefully my diagram works

That looks hot. I would say go for that or put in an intercooler to help with that... ya know. }>

Hey bro, he never said he is trying to fake an intercooler, so quit trying to stir up trouble!!

I think it will look good. Off the top of my head I cannot think of a vehicle that has a huge front grill like that except for semi trucks. Might have to make something custom.

dude that looks pretty nice. as far as intercoolers, i don't think they make any that're big enough to fill that big a space... i think that's a nice alternative. i don't think he's tryna make it looks like he has intercooler, it just looks cool. the FMIC's i've seen w/ blitz kits usally have the piping showing or somethin.. if somebody's got one that fills the full space i'd really like to see it.

I like the idea too. A buddy of mine has a grill like that on his Bronco. The only thing is that it is not flat. It bows out a bit. I dunno where you would find a flat one. But good luck to ya :-)

it's called a billet grill.

they have them for lots of domestic cars like mustangs.

I have found several billet grills on Ebay. Just not flat :-) Unfortunately, that isn't my car in the photo above I just got it off the internet. I used a pic of an eclipse and a pic of the grill and did a quick paint shop job to show what I am trying to do. I'm not trying to make it look like my car has a FMIC, I'm trying to find an alternative to the mesh grill. Does anyone know where I could find a flat grill? I have a friend that works wonders with welding.... Oh yeah, I was thinking of bolting it in to. If I did this I would definetely bolt it in my Urethane bumper. I got the idea now I just need some help finding the materials. Fabrication shouldn't be a problem...finding the grill that is big enough might be. Even one with a slight bow might suffice. I know I'll be looking at a lot of trucks this week :-) Thanks for all of the feedback! Hope to get some more :-)

I have actually seen them on e-bay for our cars. Just keep checking. I remember that they aren't as much as the grill craft grills. I think they were going for like $60.

did I say he was trying for a fmic look? no. do I try and stir up trouble? no. people say shit to me or someone else that is unfair or pointless. and I reply. I think it kinda looks like a fmic, but then again, not really. I am just saying. It looks like an fmic kinda. Just like a fake bov sounds like a bov kinda.
Personally, I think vertical grills may look better. Those are way nasty on that car b/c the mesh on the sides doesn't match the billet grill in the middle. As I replied on dsmtuners, it's also not gonna really protect the fmic or radiator from rocks, etc. Mesh is closer together and helps prevent damage to stuff in your bay.
But then again, I'm just trying to stir up trouble. :rolleyes

I have found that the grills of Silverado are quite large and flat. Any other suggestions?

Damn....I kind of found what I am looking for.

These are pretty high in the price range! What if it didn't work I would be $165+ down the crapper. Does anyone know where I could get these for a cheaper price range and larger if possible. I was estimating $60 or so, apparently I grossly underestimated the cost of one.

"damn dude, wtf? You are double posting like hell on here and dsmtuners. EDIT once in a while please!!!!! "

If you didn't notice I have recieved different feedback on different sites. I can really survive without your infinite wisdom on my matters. Also, who the hell says I'm double posting? More like quadruple posting... I guess you haven't excreted you opinion all over those sites yet. Please I can do without your opinion on how I should post. I am posting for myself and others inorder to share an idea that I am trying to fabricate. Besides what gives you the right to criticize me? I'm wanting to customize a grill, at least I am not sticking flames down the side of my car. Oops, I double posted this message too. Back to the subject: Can I get some more opinions and ideas on this. The price is my new problem. Any stock grills athat resemble the billets on some newer trucks that anyone knows of? :-)

He is still getting very good input from fellow members, so I am not going to lock this thread. Please focus on technical aspects here. If you have a problem with someone, talk to them through email.

I think the toyota grill has some posibilities, get the measurements to be sure that it would be wide enough-rather to long than too short, you could always cut off the excess and use a little enginuity to mount it. Also i could see where it would benefit an intercooler by providing some protection against flying rocks and road debris, they regular grill craft shit is getting to much play among the civics anyway.

the only ones that come to my mind are the Ford F-series trucks like the F-250 or an Expedition (same front end as the f-150)

also try looking at the Escalade grills, they are pretty big.

I'd rather have a real IC. Why don't you get a Front Mount Intake System, it "looks" like a billet grill, but at least ya get a CAI out of it ;-)
34013, RE: New idea...Need opinions
Posted by Layton141, Nov-11-02 02:59 PM
Yeah I've seen those Front Mount Cold Air Intakes before. I think R-1 makes them. I don't think they make one for an eclipse though:-(

Does anyone know of one of these for an eclipse. Of course, I guess it wouldn't be too hard to "customize" one to fit an eclipse. What car is the most similar to an eclipse and would require the least amount of work to custom tailor the piping. They make them for Honda Prelude and civics I think. I'm not canning the billet grill idea, but some input on this would be very helpful too. I too have had that idea. Thanks for the post!

The grill you are most likely going to want to use for something like that is going to be a 1992-1994 Ford F150 front grill. It's slightly curved but mostly flat and it can be worked and shaped easily.

Does it have to be polished?
If not then you could do a lot more with a lot less $$ by going with some aluminum square tubing from a hardware store.
it could be done.
