32204, Different ways to hold up that hood! Posted by BattleZEclipse98, Oct-08-02 02:52 PM
Ok, we all have the stupid little pole that holds up the hood when we're working on our cars, but, i have seen some other cars come stock with those hydrolic looking things that hold it up real nice and simple. i like it. does anyone know of a mod or the right parts to do something like this? is there any other nice ways of holding up that hood. i mean... it cant be too expensive to do.

i did see someone with a set of the pistons we use for the trunks for the hood but i have no clue how they did it.

are you talking about like how the hatch is held open?...with the struts?

Yeah, that's what he's talkin bout. You would just have to find mounting points under the hood, and drill them in. Unless somebody has exact mounting points figured out, you will just have to do it by trial and error. I'd say anchor them somewhere on the very top of the firewall, and mount the other ends somewhere on the hoods frame skeleton thingy.

I twont work, I have dabled in this and there is no room for any place to mount the strut anywhere under the hood. the next best thing to hold up the hood would be a broom stick

mount it on the inside of the fender , the lip part close to the firewall, that might work, that's how my old buick had them. If i had a digital camera and my sisters car was around I'd take a pic (she has the buick now)

if u mean at a car show- get a stock spring powdercoated or chromed to hold it up, use a spare rim, I have seen poles wrapped in vinyl, etc. Take the hood off(I don't really like this one, but do your own thing), etc. Just be creative.

Yeah thats what I meant. I think it'd be do-able but it'd take a lot of work to get everything just right. I think maybe I should just get an extra set of struts and see what I come up with. a Drill and a hammer can work wonders :)

but is the hood strong enough to not bend when applying pressure to compress the strut?

Have you ever picked up a stock hood?? that thing is a monster, it is plenty strong.

I seriously don't think you would have any probs with hoods bending or anything. You wouldn't really be stressing anything all that much, the struts don't need an incredible amount of force to shut, afaik.

no, there is no way for it to work cause there is no place to fit! Ive looked befor and toyed with it, there is no good mounting place and you would have to have a bracked welded to your hood, so there is no way! I telling you you are gana waste your time, the only thing that can be modified is your trunk, thats all I could do so blaaaaaa

well- whats the big deal about welding a bracket inside the hood somewhere. it would only take a second-- and actually, now that you mention it, a bracket would make life a lot easier so you wouldnt have to be cutting and drilling the chassis only to find out it doesnt work. good idea :-P

well for him, it would be kinda hard to weld to fiberglass/ carbon fiber
