31041, Why wont my reverse lights work?!?!?!? Posted by nappyjim, Sep-14-02 12:07 AM
Ok, i did the ass swap so i need to lengthen the wires so i cut em and connencted about 3 more feet of wire to them. Hooked the wires back up the same way. making sure the black wire got reconnected with black, etc. Now i go in reverse and the lights wont light up. Is there a fuse under my dash that might be blown? I lost the plastic covering for it that tells u what each fuse is for.
I checked the tallight fuse in the engine, that is fine. the brake lights work, just the reverse ones dont. I made sure the connectors were hooked up also. Could i take a one of those volt tester things with the car in reverse and should the wires show up some type of voltage? would that help me in anyway? could someone plese tell me if theres a fuse for reverse lights under the dash!!

This once happened to my car when I first got. not all the wire lenthening (sp?), but the fact that the reverse lights wouldn't work. I had to take it to the dealership and they had to replace some relay swith. They work great now though. Not sure if this will help you though.

theres a fuse box under the dash for the reverse lights. it's on the left side by your clutch. it shows on the cover where the fuse is for the reverse lights. change it and it should do the job.

Dayam I love this board! I was just going to do a search about this exact issue. Sabot and I spent an hour or so testing fuses, wires, connections and some other crap to see why my reverse lights don't work. We narrowed it down the something between the fuse box and clutch. Now we know exactly what to look for. Thanks for info bro.

hey guys i had this same problem. its not your wires/ not your fuses. there is a thing on the transmition that senses when you put the car into reverse. now i had to goto satan to buy the part.. $55.. insane its like 1" big lol.. anyway look into your engine bay.. look on the transmition in the front.. right under where the stock intake would go. it has a brass nut fitting at the bottem and a plactic piece up top... take that out and look over the ball bearing.. push it in and such.. you should not have to push it in very far.. if it is hard to push right away the bearing is good.. if you can push it in all the way go get a new part. if you neeed anymore help feel free to email me. speeddesigns@hotmail.com

what he is talking about is the reverse light switch. It is on top of the tranny, underneath the stock intake/airbox. It has a 2-wire(?)connector on top. It tends to go bad; you're probably going to have to get a new one.
On another note - $55?!?!? I paid like $20 and thought that was crap!

Well the switch on the tranny is what it turned out to be on my car. When I removed it, the bearing was just fine. We switched in Sabot's good switch and it worked fine. I just hope they sell it for $20.00 and not $55.00. Thanks alot for the info.

so was it $20 or $55? i think i gotta replace mine. if i bypass the sensor they'll light up. and if i put the sensor back in while it's in reverse they'll light up. but if i shift out an back into reverse they don't light up. it's irritating. it halfway works. dammit.
anyways i gotta go to the dealer an check 'bout my ball joint recall and get them to get rid of that Secondary Pulsed Air whatever system CEL. so we'll see.

It's possible that your reverse light switch has gone out. Our reverse lights worked one day and the next they didn't. Checked the fuses and things were fine, took it to Satan turned out my switch simply went out. Though I never did a conversion swap, and i don't know if cutting the wires have anything to do with that, but try the switch. I believe that its located under the rear seat. Hope this helps.

lol there's a switch too? i'm pretty sure it's the sensor on the tranny though... the lights should come on when i push in the ball bearing, right? if i bypass the sensor an just bridge the two leads the reverse lights come on fine... just not when it's hooked up to the sensor.
