2916, Tiny bulbs for gauge cluster?
Posted by alexries, Apr-11-01 04:54 AM
Hey, I'd like to change the color of my gauges at night. So I pulled the cluster out and it uses 2 different sized push-in bulbs. One's about 3mm wide and the larger was ~5mm wide. Anyone ever done this? Where can I get the bulbs.

Pull them out and look there should be a number printed on them.

And let me know, because if I do the switch to Indiglos I want to change odometer to blue and everything else to blue or red.

...with stock gauge faces. The plastic is three layer, white on top, orange in the middle, white on back. i've pulled the instrument cluster apart. Even if you change the bulb color, it'll still show some variation of orange.

So, there's no way to remove the orange crap, I guess indiglo's are the next option. Can I change the color of the A/C, blower and hot/cold color? Or is there some orange film behind there too?

What do you think about red bulbs behind? My stereo hase red buttons lit with a blue display so, the color scheme would match. Do you think it would be worth it? Or turn out like crap?

LAST EDITED ON 12-Apr-01 AT 11:03 AM (PST)

take some fine grade sandpaper to that orange crap for a while and then get some transparent paint in the color that you want and go nutz. just make sure you go real slow with very fine paper. you may even wet sand it

If it's a three layers you'd have to get rid of 2/3 of the material to do this... HAve you done this? or is this just a thought? I worry about weakening the pastic and breaking something.

Those gauge faces are less that 1/16th of an inch thick. As far as the heater/ac controls, heck, if someone can tell me how it comes apart, i'll find out. I tried to get at those bulbs and for the life of me i couldn't work the 15 little freaking wedge-clips loose to remove the control panel.

Well next time I take her apart. I'll see what I can find out. I do want to redo my switch panel... backlit plexiglass with some labels etc. anyway when I get around to that I'll see if I can pull her apart.

I'd appreciate the input. Look in your service manual and see if that's covered anywhere!
