ok guys, some of you may remember a while back when I destroyed my headliner trying to add vinyl to it. I just ordered another headliner ($200 bucks from SATAN!) and im gonna try again...

I really dont wanna ruin this headliner again, so to those who have done this please give me some advice! ive seen the write up and that helped alot!

but heres my question, the headliner (as stock) has a couple layers. a very very thin carpet like material.. is that ALL i remove first?? or should i try gluing the vinyl to the carpet??? also the vinyl I have is kinda thick and tough, but it looks so nice and matches the other vinyl in the car, did you use really flimsy vinyl???

well im the one who has the write-up on the mods page. When i tped mine off, i tore off both layers.... The carpet and the syrofoam backing. What you need to do is start from one end and just pull up on it. Then move over a couple of inches and start pulling it up there so that the carpet is pulled off as high as it is on the end. Keep moving over a little till the carpet is all pulled off the one end. like the pic below.

See where the stars are going acroos it. Pull off along a full horizontal line like that. Because if you try to just start from one corner and just keep pulling from that one spot, chances are the actual cardboard of the headliner might crack because it is pretty flmisy.

Im not sure if this made any sense...its hard to explan. Tell me if you understand.

i think i get you. so you took off the thin carpet and the layer under?? after you removed those layers... was the headliner still stiff?? last time i took 1 layer off too many i think because the headliner was as flimsey as paper when i was working on it. even after glueing the vinyl on it was so flimsey i couldnt get it to stay up without falling.

im waiting for the headliner, i ordered it but its not here yet. i think when i get it ill post some pictures of the headliner, if you dont mind maybe show me then what you mean.

yah, it is extremely flimsy. Thats why when u tear off the cloth and the styrofoam you have to tear it off horizontally across the whole the headliner. because if you just grab from one corner and continue to pull the cloth off only from that first spot, chances are the carboard might get a major bend.

So yes it is flimsy. When you say you couldent even get it to stay up, what do you mean? Because even after i glued on my new cloth, it was still flimsy. like if i held if off the ground on one end, the other end would curve down. When i put it back in the car...the first thing i did was put back in the 4 plastic screws in each corner. Then worked from there. i should have taken pictures....would have been a lot easier to explain.

The headliner consists of a "foam board" with some spongey frabic glued onto it.

When you peel off the frabic you have to make sure you don't peel into the foam board. The foam board itself is hard, that's what keeps the headliners shape.

not to sound like a jackosaurus, but are you speaking from expereince?
cause if you buy new headliner material it comes with new foam backing. So if you leave theold foam on, it is gonna be twice as thick when you put it back on. And it might not fit then. imo

Yes, I am speaking from experience. The headliner board is like a foam board (two pieces of thin cardboard sandwiching some foamy substance in the center). On this board you have your headliner material glued on. The headliner material is like some foam backed polyester material (foam on one side, colored frabic on the other side).

So when you yank off the headliner material from the headliner board, you have to make sure you get rid of the foam that's stuck onto the board as well.

Couldn't you just glue whatever material you wanted directly onto the colored material. So you wouldn't be tearing it up, I thought that's what people were doing when I first read about the headliner mod. Why couldn't you just do that?
