What kind of clay or whatever do they use to make body kit mods?

Clay? I thought it was fiberglass stuff.... I don't really know though, but I thought it was that for most of them....unless they used urethane for it. (???) I dunno just trying to help...I could be wrong.

To modify body kits, you use fiberglass and bondo. If you are talking about an actual mold for production, you first make the actual bumper, then spray some chemical (like a gel layer over it), then lay fiberglass over the bumper until it is at least 3/4" thick. Then you let everything dry and physically break the original bumper free from the mold. There are some other steps too. You have to wax the mold and do some other stuff. If you are talking about making a bumper from scratch, I saw on Hi-Rev Tuners that they did use some sort of clay to make a bumper model from scratch. But that would be really hard I think. You'd have to be a real pro...

Clay is pretty easy to work by itself. It's dirt cheap too since it is dirt. However you have to worry about how you dry it otherwise it will crack. I don't know how difficult it would be to make a mold off of clay.

You could use plasteline, but that’s a lot more expensive, but you don’t have to worry about drying issue since it won’t dry out.

Plastiline (I may be spelling it wrong, but if you go to just about any arts supply store they should have it right next to clay) is just like clay except they have removed all the water from it and replaced it with some type of oil. Clay is nothing more than a particular type of dirt mixed with water, mud basically.

However if you're trying to make a mold clay and plastiline won't work. Clay is too britlle and plastiline is too soft.

For arts and crafts plaster works well for small molds. But if you tried to make a mold big enough for a front bumber out of plaster it would be damn heavy.

Your best bet would be to make the mold out of fiberglass. From what I've read you have to use the right type of gel coat for the mold. Because any imperfection in the mold will transfered to the parts made from it. If you're really intrested go to a book store and pick up a book on fiberglass mold making. They exist. I have one.
