A friend of mine just bought a '93 (I think) TSi-AWD and he is wondering if he can turn his BOV into and external BOV...I don't know what those cars are set up with stock, but does he have a BOV, and if he wants everybody to be able to hear it, does he need to buy an aftermarket BOV??? TIA

You can hear them...pretty well, but if he wants a loud one, then yes he will need an aftermarket BOV.

i have a stock 1g BOV on my 2g GST and its loud as hell! It makes a nice wooooshing sound! I have no idea what they sound like on stock 1g tho. put on on cone filter if he hasnt alreay, that will allot more sound to get out.

I drove his car yesterday, as hard as I could, and I never heard the BOV once...he says he only hears it once in a while when the sound reflects off buildings.

i really dont know much about the 1g cars. but my turbo was vitually silent when the car was stock. they are built that way so people dont phreak out when they hear the turbo sounds. i never heard the bov in mine at all. i bought a 1g BOV and a cone filter and put them on at the same time and when i first test drove my car i couldnt beleive the difference it made.

You guys are just talking about a cone filter for the intake right?? Replace the stock intake with a cone filter?? Sorry if I'm wrong, I've only looked under the hood of a turboed car once, I'm not sure what you're talking about...

yeah, tell him to go to vfaq.com or dsm.org and do the free mods. That along with an intake should make the BOV much more hearable (is that a word? hehe). Also he shouldnt vent his car to the atmosphere. It wont do any physical harm to the car, but when he "blows off" the BOV will be venting previously measured air into the atmosphere rather than into the engine. The ECU will dump the appropriate amount of fuel into the engine for that measured air thus making him run rich. It should only be a problem during shifting though so its up to him.

How does he vent his BOV to the atmosphere...I think that's what he is asking for???

look for the vfaq for how to crush the bov then you can vent to the atmosphere (sp?) this is how my 1g is currently setup.
