Does anyone know what body kits are made of?
How hard is it make your own body kit?

I believe it's made by spraying fiberglass into a mold. they are also made of polyurethane. As far as the actual process I understand it is pretty easy, just costly as far as all the equimpment you need to do it. Or you could just JB weld some plastic and sheet metal together and screw it on the body...:)...j/k

I think andys autosport in san jose will do a custom body kit for you not sure how much. I never asked. but i know it would not be cheap. Plus i bet they would keep the mold and make others from it. I remember they told me that when my car was there getting a body kit, check their website if you want to http://www.andysautosport.com

I know it's not much help but it's worth a shot. What most people i know do take a front bumper from another car and have it custom fitted on the car. well that's what i did. It's a hella of lot cheaper then having one made.

first off body kits are mostly made of fiber glass, but urithane is becomeing a bigger trend........

how hard are they to make? If you are asking this question then this is deffenatly something you should not try to do yourself, its a huge undertaking and it takes years to master.

trying to have someone custom make one can be difficult but there are people that do it, one of my clubs sponcers can make n e thing, he just took a civic front and molded it onto the front of a 92 corloa and it looks factory, but its a pricy job

Hand laid fiberglass is better than sprayed. All our kits are hand layed. We can modify a bumper from any other car to fit your car, starting at 850 for labor alone without including the cost of the kit. For example, a black widow front bumper from an accord had to be cut into 10 pieces to be modified to fit a wide body lexus es300. It is a lot of work, and no one can make a bumper on their own unless they have a lot of experience. If you are asking, then there is no way you can do it.

I'm only typing all this because i'm greedy for some stars next to my sceenname *hint-hint*.

It isn't as hard as you think it is. But, you have to make your own mold. It isn't as expensive as you think either. You should try it yourself before trying it a real component. This also works for carbon fiber and kevlar but, if you take it more then a couple of layers it can flex and induce stress on itself, and i'm not going into the trouble of typing this out right now. Practice makes perfect!
Here are the things you would need :

1)Fiberglass fabric
2)Butchers wax
3)Epoxy resin
4)Flux or microballoons *for repairs*
5)fine sand paper
6)and peel-ply fabric
7)a fibre glass board for practice
8)plastic or rubber card *squeegie*
9)Cups- Lots of them I perfer Dixie
10)large foam block

Ok ready to start? PRACTICE FIRST
*This must be done in a cool damp area no hotter than 87deg F not colder then 65deg F
*Caution- sanding fiberglass can cause irritation to the skin and lungs, it also causes static electricity which attracts dirt

1)Clean your board
2)Apply butchers wax w/ a towel. NOT YOUR HANDS this WILL melt the wax
3)Lay a piece of fiberglass fabric, this is just for practice, so about - a foot-by-a-foot or 12"x12"
4)Mix your resin, MIX for a least 30 seconds or whatever the manufacturer suggests Don't mix too much, small portions at a time
5)Pour the resin onto the fiberglass and smooth it out with a plastic card giving it a wet look. Leave no air bubbles
6)Overlay the peel and ply ummm... cut it to 13"x13" with the shiny part facing down. it should overlay the fiberglass fabric nicely
7)Mix another cup of resin if you used all of it already. And again pour it onto the peel-and-ply fabric
8)Spread it with the card again leaving no air bubbles.
9)Go to sleep
10)Wake up and peel off the peel-and-ply
11)Looks nice eh?
12)You can repeat no. 1-10 if you want a second layer or forth layer
13)Sand when you're only absolutly finish

OK- If you've done the steps above and succeeded you may move on...
This should be pretty simple if you figure it out

1)Cut the foam block to the dimension you want- for the bumper, cut concave
2)Mix some epoxy and mircoballoon or flux until it gets to a glue like texture
*for the next THREE STEPS do only a small area at a time
3)apply to the foam block, completely covering a good size area
4)mold the fibreglass fabric on, NO BUBBLes
5)apply the peel-and-ply
6)Let dry for 8 hours
7)NOW YOU HAVE A fiberglass MOLD

Now you have two choices-
1)Keep the mold for future uses
or
2)Use the mold as a layer of your bumper

choose no. 1

1)Pull off the pull-and-peel and apply butchers wax
2)mix epoxy
3)layer the fiberglass in pieces
4)pour the epoxy and even it out
5)repeat no. 2-4 about fours times
6)lay pull-and-peel over everything and let dry
7)go to sleep!
8)You'll wake up with a brand new bumper!
