22980, Taking out headlights...remove bumper or not?? getting diff answers..

I need to take out my pass side headlight, it has a leak and has mad condensation in it all the time. I have been getting mixed replys saying that you do need to remove the whole bumper(remember i have a 98 stock bumper, never removed before), and some say no, you dont have to.. I have read the removal writeup, and it says to get at the last 2 bolt holding on the bumper, you need to remove the headlights..So to me that means you dont have to fully remove the bumper?? How bout some info here fellas..TIA

put it this way. you need to remove the bumper to remove the headlights, and you need to remove the headlights to remove the bumper :-)

Take it from someone who has installed projectors. There is a bolt underneath the headlight that is IMPOSSIBLE to get to without removing the bumper. It is really easy though, just remove the bolts from between the headlights, then the bolts on the bottom of the bumper, the two bolts in each tire well, then there are four bolts under the car (this is what connects the bumper support to the car) then the bumper will just pull off and you can access those bolts. If you have any ?'s hit me up

THIS WAS QUOTED FROM MY FAQ made on my site.....

No, you don't have to remove the bumper to remove the headlites. The headlites have to come off to remove the bumper.

"-Now you must remove the headlight to get to the last two bolts. On the backside outer edge of each headlight are two more 10mm bolts holding the light to the frame. these are hard to get to without an assortment of wrenches and sockets, but you may find it easier than i did. The final headlight bolt is the hardest to get to. If you look closely from behind the lights, they are at the very bottom of the headlight. They can also be seen if you lay down in front of the car and look up through the front air dam hole. Just get a reallly long socket wrench extension and slide it through in between the gap of the bottom of the headlight and the bumper...easy. "

do like toney said, take off all the screws from section in between both the headlights, then remove the screws holding the bumper cover to each fender, these are in the wheel well you will have to remove the 2 splash shields they are 10 mm then go under the car and and remove 2 screws from each side from the main supports for the bumper, i think they are 14 mm screws. believe me this is much easier than trying to get that last screw that is behind the fog light area off or taking just the bumper cover off. when you follow these directions the whole bumper structure, bumper cover and bumper mount will come off as one piece and then you just reverse it to put it back on.

Hey thanks for the info guys, but i did mangage to get the light out without removing the bumper! It was a bitch, but it works. I took out the bolts betweent the headlights on top of the bumper, and then took out the fog light housing. I then cut away some of the thin black plastic engough to get my socket wrench in there, and most of my hand. Lucky i have small hands, or this wouldn't have worked too well. I now just have it out, but i may not be able to put in the bottom bolt on the headlight housing, so we'll see how that goes..haha, its kinda strange putting your headlight in the oven to get it apart :)

I was able to get my front bumper off without removing my headlights I just used a flat head screwdriver and popped out the 2 plastic screws under the headlights. Of course at the time I did not have a socket extension to get at the bottom bolt of the headlight and just wanted to get the bumper off :).

I guess nobody beleives Mike. Told you so, and you didnt have to cut into ur foglight assembly either. Reread what I said about the long extension in between the bumper and bottom of the headlites.

:rolleyes

Yeah, kapt, i could have done that, but i didnt have any 1/4" drives or u-joints to make that work. Unfortunately i was at home doing this with limited tools, not my tools at the shop. There was just barely enough room to get my fingers in between the headlight and the bumper there with all of the headlight bolts out, so i could have used a socket and extension with a u-joint on it to do it...just didn't really have a long enough extension..thanks anyway

just like i said earlier, you do not need to take off the bumper to get the lights out. it is just a bitch to get the last bolts out from the bottom part of the headlight assembly.

i got BOTH my headlights without removing bumper. For the bottom bolt. I got a big flat head screwdrivers and kinda of pryed down the bumper to make a little gap between the bottom of the headlights and the bumper. And my dad took a socket wrench with one of those long ass socket extension got it thru the opening and unscrewed the bolt.

Mike is right. I did it the same way, it took me about 3 minutes to do it. But I spend about 1 hour just trying to locate that F-%&$ screw.

Well, I sure as hell didnt take my bumper off. God that would have been a waste of my time.. I just used removed the stock fog lights(well, place holders for them since I got an RS) and got an extension in there and took the fuggin bolt out. Wasnt so hard. Getting it back in was a bit harder, but I got it back in.
