i was down the same path, new hatch struts wont do it.. the intial weight of the hatch (also depends on your spoiler) is just to much to open with the top of a solinoid.. the solinoids that ive worked with dont pop the hatch high enough for it to take off enough weight for the struts to do the rest of the work.. some people have acheived this but used linear actuators in place of the hatch struts.. if you find another way (linears are spensive as hell) please let me know! :)

have you tried installing one solenoid at the back edge fo the hatch to pop it open and then installing another stronger one at the top of the hatch door where it would get the most leverage? sync them up to pop one after the other and it might work.

I was gana try new shcoks, mine are dead, but I might have to pick up a few linear actuators and try to link them up. If I where to replace on of the struts I would have to wait for ever for it to oppen

Maybe u could see if there are air shocks that would work on your rear hatch. But I think that would be alot of work. I have heard of them but have never seen them. besides u would need an air tank and switches.

its my cheesy first attempt at a webpage assignment that goes into detail on how our trunk latch sux

basically what everyone else already said but with big words and a lil more detail...

maybe w/no spawla it could be done,

There is a way to make your hatch open "hands free" but I think it's a little different than what you want. You're starting right, but instead of putting new shocks in, replace one of them with a motor driven actuator. They'll lift or support anywhere from 5-150lbs depending on your application. You only need one because once it has lifted the hatch, the factory shock will take it from there and assist it. But, they're switch activated, so you would have to be in the car to activate it or have it wired to your remote (if you have a DEI alarm). These things work great, We've used them to open hoods, doors, trunks, lift speaker boxes, and move amps around. If you want more info, lemme know.

P.S: The motors are electric so you don't need any tanks and the switch used is a regular toggle switch found at Radioshack.

where did you get the trunk solenoid? i would like to be able to open my hatch from the remote, but don't need it to lift, just unlatch. also, is the problem you're having that the hatch doesn't even lift enough for it to unlatch after the solenoid is activated? or is it just that you want it to lift all the way by itself? tia

yea where u get the solenoid and how much it cost, plus would u be able wire it to an aftermarket alarm system remote?

I got my solinod off ebay for $15 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1821556790&r=0&t=0 and it was easy to install, no drilling or anything. I can make a write one of these days. IT pops the trunk up a inch just like if you poped it from inside. Ive considered a linear actuator, but it all comes down to if I where to open my trunk I would have to push the popper and then rige up a system to open and close it. I just want to push the button have it open and shut it normayly.
Is there any high powered gas shocks out there or sumthin? I might have to hit the auto zone

get some tokico blues.... or..illuminas if you want to adjust them...

jk..

but..that does sound like a cool idea... except for when the remote is in your pocket and you accidentally hit the open button and you dont realize it.....

door poppers would work to unlatch it. I may be doing something similar however have not decided yet.

Easy fix. Though slightly expensive. Get pistons from a car w/ a heavier back end. And if it needs a hand, use a linear actuator. Select Products has em. They aren't cheap though.

Hey guys... speaking 'bout trunks. Any of you have or had the problem in which you pull the latch to open the trunk and the trunk doesn't open sometimes ? 'Cuz I am having that problem. It's erratic but; I gotta pull the latch, go to the trunk and apply some force upwards... then pull the latch back again in order for the trunk to open.
Sorry to bring this up like this and change the topic but didn't want to open up a new post for this... Any help would be appreciated !

Thanxs !

hey.. i understand what your talking about.. Shoot... I have this problem almost everytime I try and open my trunk.. And.. this started to happen the first day I bought my car.. but was to lazy to bring it back to satan to be looked at.. I think that its just the latch on the bottem that needs to be ajusted or something. but who knows.. its just annoying.. but not damged so I got used to it. but hey.. if you find out how to fix that problem hit me up at jasonhko@hotmail.com thanks.

back to me, A linear actuator wont work as you all think, to hook it up in the same spot the factory shocks are, you would have to cut the car apart, there is no room for the motor asembly, and I dont wana have to wait for the thing to close, I need heavy duty shocks, that will lift it up and the popers will push it up enough for the shocks to get out of the horizontal positon. The factory shocks are 33" long with 18" case with 16" shaft, mine are all rusty and crapy, some one said there trunk will open 2 feet when opened.
