Hey guys,

I'm painting my dash and I'm having some difficulty. Every other piece came out very well, except for the main dash. (figures...) Now the paint on the dash keeps bunching up, and whenever I sand it down and reprimer it theres a shelf in the paint. Any ideas?

did you prep it before you painted it. I would completly strip it down and start from a fresh start

I cleaned it and primed it. Was I supposed to do anything else? Also what's the best way to strip it? Certain type of paint stripper that won't destroy the vinyl?

You are using a special vynyl spray paint right?? I dont think you are supposed to use a primer with this type of paint. The paint is supposed to "soak" into the vynl, and the primer might be messing it up. Use paint remover to get it off, but i've never used remover on vynl before, but it *should* be ok, but it will def need to be painted if using that.

no you shoudnt be using duplicolor paint either, what did you pay about $3 a can for that shit? go get some SEM's paint from an auto paints store, its about $8 a can...i had the same problem with duplicolor because i used it on my doors when i first did my interior. its like trying to wrap the dash in saran wrap, it always bunches in the creased areas

Yep, you are supposed to paint the vynl, not the primer :) If its bunching up, then you are putting it on too heavy. Do several(i do about 3-4) coats, but make them very light and thin.By the third coat, i pretty much have full coverage, and the use the fourth coat for the final layer. Let the paint dry up for about 10 minutes in between coats. I am using the same paint, and it seems to work pretty good so far. Be sure to clean the plastic and vynl parts very well with soap and water, and use paper towels to dry them, to make sure nothing else gets on the surface. i didn't use primer on my plastic parts, and it seems to be ok. I have heard some very good stuff about SEM's paint though..Also, you really don't need that much paint to get it looking good. It by no means needs to be plastered on there with a lot of paint. Too much paint will most likely chip..

the prob u are having is what i suffered from at first...remember my "eff dash" post i made when i first did it? ;-)

ur problem is that u are spraying too close with the can...spray a good 1-2 feet away....make it a fine mist of paint...yes, you go through more cans this way, but its the only way to gaurantee a good paint job. trust me. been there, done that...my shit was fucked up at first, flaking and peeling, you name it...got it to settle finally and work right after the second coat of lightly spraying with over 3-4 cans...

how does the dash come out im about to paint my dash right now and didn't really want to paint it in the car if i didn't have to. I would think i would get a lot of overspray here and there. Kaptian Mike did you paint yours while it was still in your car? If so did you get any overspray on your windows anywhere or seats anything? Lemme know I just want to do it right the first time, thx

i painted everyting inside the car...except for the center console and the rear 1/4 panels i took those out and painted them.

yeah, i would have to say that you are spraying too close. If you spray too close, then it will bunch up and start to bubble really fast. And you probably dont need primer for vinyl paint

anyone have a prepping plan or in that sort for masking things off that you dont want to get paint on? in example: windows, seats, vents etc... Once it warms up here, Im going all out with my interior. So any help/ideas would be excellent. thanks.

Yes I also used Dupli-Color, It worked great so far. I still have the dash and center console. I used some Dupli-Color Clear 500 degree engine enamel for a clear coat and it works great. Just thought that I would throw that out there. Hope it works out.
