17401, pics of my upper dash and custom mirror/faceplate Posted by trickedeclipse, Mar-18-02 03:29 AM
ok, so i had a harder time than i thought with molding the whole thing and then taking into consideration that i wanted to put a mirror tinted piece of glass in front of the faceplate. well, let's just say, i sanded, and filled, and sanded and filled for hours and hours until the faceplate was perfectly molded into the mirror housing. i didn't want to mess anything else up so i scratched the idea of putting a mirror on there. also note my white upper dash and pillar. everything else is ripped up, and i haven't finished painting everything yet. (just ordered 10 more cans of SEM paint to finish the job) there's gonna be a tv where the stereo was. and the stereo is going to be in the glove box.
the pics are a bit dark because of the damn snow on the windshield.

to answer the question, i measured how long/wide the faceplate was, then i traced it on the back part of the mirror. i used a dremel and cut the mirror housing to be exactly the same size as the faceplate. then i did all the wiring. i soldered 15 pin computer monitor cable to the prongs on the back of my faceplate. (i opened the faceplate up, of course) after everything was done, i taped off the visable part of the faceplate with the florescent green 3M tape. (that stuff's worth the extra dollar or two) i then fiberglassed the wire to the faceplate backing so that a good tug on the wire wouldn't rip the solder off of the prongs on the back of the faceplate. while the fiberglass layer was still drying, i placed the back of the mirror housing on the back of the foberglass, and used rubber bands to hold it in place. after a night's worth of sleep, the faceplate was nicely stuck to the mirror housing. then i basically dremeled off any excess fiberglass drippings, and started filling and sanding using bondo. after about 10 hours worth, it looked good, but had some tiny pinholes. i used a think layer of bondo spot and glaze putty over the entire project except the front part. i sanded with 220 grit sandpaper, followed with 330, then 600. this thing is perfect, and looks awesome. i get to see it at night for the first time tonight.

i don't know what i'm gonna do yet. i think what i might do is fabricate my stock mirror on metal clips, so that i can slip my mirror over the faceplate if needed. but for cruisin on the weekends and long straight trips, i think i'll just leave it off.
any suggestions? i'll post better pics tomorrow.

did you paint the dash from the inside or did you take it out

trust me, take cyan's advice and paint it in the car... i'd recommend 2.5 cans of SEM paint on the upper dash alone. wet sand between every two or three very light coats. it's PERRRRRRRRFECT! feels smooth as glass. just make sure you get enough paint up in the area where that small bump is near the windshield, i had to repaint mine a second time to hit up that spot.

Is it ok if i use krylon

17416, RE: pics of my upper dash and custom mirror/faceplate Posted by trickedeclipse, Mar-20-02 07:37 AM
anybody used krylon before? i'm stuck on this whole SEM thing, so i can't really make a comment. i'm not sure, but i think (at least) on the upper dash, you'd want to use flexible paint.
