I think the message title speaks for itself, I just would like to know the technique to stripping tint. I am getting new tint job because mine is bad, and the local tint shop charges 130 for the car, and then 100 to strip the old tint, so I think it behooves me to strip the tint myself, cause I have time.

u can use a razor blade for the windows, but be careful on the rear hatch glass, cuz the defroster is there.

kapn myke had to go thru the same ordeal awhile back, so u may wanna hit him up for sum info, or do a search....

i did it too what you have to do is get some real good cleaner and soak the tint... get a razor and scrap it at a corner and peel off the tint... then the worst part lol takes a couple hours get the razor and scrape every little bit of glass so you get the glue off and be careful not to scratch the glass

Use straight amonia in a spray bottle, and a razor blade. Peel an edge of the window film with the razor, and start to carefully peel it off, while spraying the glass down with the amonia along the peeling tint. Use the razor to scrape the rest of the glue off. Another teqnique to use is to peel it off and try to keep it one piece, and spary the window and the backside of the film you just peeled. Put the film back on the window, and spread it out some back on the glass, and let it sit there for about 20 mins or so. when you go to peel the film, all or most of the glue will come with it. For a back glass with a defroster, DONT use a blade! Use the same amonia, and FINE steel wool. After you peel all of the film, the steel wool will with the amonia will take off the glue. It time consuming, so bare with it, if you can bare the smell of the amonia :) Another trick for the back window, and believe me this actually works!! It must be warm and sunny out for this to work! TAke a black garbage bag and cut it so you can get the largest amount of coverage with it. Place the bag over the outside of the window, and tape it down firmly as much as you can to glass, and follow the whole window with the bag, as if you were tinting it with the bag. Cut the bag to fit the window. Now soak the inside of the glass right on top of the tint itself. Take the bag, and place it on the inside of the car on the back window as if you were re-tinting with it. Be sure to soak both the inside of the bag, and the tint itself. Let it bake in the sun for about a good 30 minutes. After that, remove the bag, and just peel off the tint, and the glue comes right along with it with NO residue..This really works, i'v done it :) Its a trade secret from a tinter i used to work with...

Rite now my back winder is fucked up. I got all of my tint off....except where the defroster lines are. it's a major clusterfuck. All scratched, peeled halfway, all fucked up! Im hella pissed too, and my hands are all sore and cut up from the razor and alcohol. (OF WHICH DOESNT WORK WORTH A SHIT)I even used a brillo pad, too.

Man I love the forum! Hey once tint is removed and the glass is cleaned, are there any problems that show up when the glass is re-tinted? Will it stick good, or bubble?

Well mike, since you got all the tint in pieces, i'm not sure if the bag trick will work, but its sitll worth a shot. Basically, you take a black garbage bag, and try to cut to open it up so you got a large piece of bag,like a sheet. Then act as if you are using the bag as new window tint. Place the bag(or bags) over the entire back window, and tape down so it doesn't move around, and tape the bags toghether if you are using more than one for full glass coverage. The reason to place this on the outside of the window, is to cut it out so the bags fits the shape and outline of the entire window. IT doesn't have to be perfect, but keep it close. Now after you got the cut out of the back window out of the bag, transfer the bag onto the INSIDE of the glass, with spraying staright amonia on the inside of the bag, and right ontop of the tint itself. NOw place the bag on the window and cover the window with the bag as you did on the outside of the window. If you cut it right, it should fit just the same as the outside. So looking from the inside of the car, you should have the bag, then the amonia spray, then the tint, then the glass. You must let it sit in the SUN in WARM weahter for at least 30 minutes. Then the tint should peel off with no left over or very little glue. Does this make sense? Basically, the sun heats the window tint, and the bag keeps in all of the heat from the sun, and the heat pulls the amonia through the tint and loosens the glue. I know, it sounds goofy, but it really works, i've personally done it. But like i said, i'm not sure how well it will work on tint that's in pieces. Use a blade to peel the left over peices, and try not to nick the defroster lines. Then use a fine steel wool and amonia to loosen the glue, then finally use some glass cleaner to finish off. Do it this way if the bag doesnt' work, it keeps the defroster lines safe, and wont scrath the glass, but takes up all of the glue. And another thing, when you re tint, get METALIZED widow film. This will NEVER turn that ugly purple, and is warrentied for life. HOpe this helps some... And for the other questoins, new tint will be just fine, so long as ALL of the glue is off of the window. MOst tint installers should clean the glass before installation, so if they mess up, it should be under warrenty anyway. Just remember, get quality window fim, and get the metalized stuff. IT is more expensive, but WELL worth it!
